Toyota Mobility Foundation Confirms Continued Success in Okinawa Yui-maru Project

Toyota Mobility Foundation and the Okinawa Yui-maru Project

The Toyota Mobility Foundation (TMF), led by Akio Toyoda, has successfully confirmed the sustained results of the Okinawa Yui-maru Project. This initiative operates in collaboration with entities such as the Okinawa Prefectural Police and various private and academic organizations, targeting both accident reduction and the revitalization of tourism in the region.

In April, TMF welcomed Aisin Corporation as a new partner, expanding their collaboration to include efforts with the Okinawa General Bureau of the Cabinet Office aimed at promoting tourism, alleviating traffic congestion, and preventing traffic accidents involving rare wildlife.

Achievements and Future Plans

Here are some specific accomplishments and upcoming initiatives under the project:

1. Infrastructure Measures

By analyzing police accident data alongside vehicle data from Toyota, and incorporating footage from dash cameras (provided by Tokio Marine & Nichido), TMF is focusing on infrastructural improvements with government agencies. The analysis led to significant decreases in accident rates, such as:
  • - Isha Intersection: After installing speed moderation poles, the accident rate decreased by approximately 60%.
  • - Wakasa Interchange near Naha Airport: Anti-slip coatings were applied, reducing accidents by around 70%.

2. Creating a Risk Map

TMF is employing AI technology, spearheaded by Tokio Marine & Nichido, to analyze police and insurance accident data, as well as vehicle data from Toyota, to create a risk map. This initiative aims to identify potentially hazardous areas to prevent accidents proactively. Discussions with the Okinawa Prefectural Police will determine effective utilization of this data in the future.

3. Promoting Safe Driving Behaviors

In collaboration with Toyota Rental Lease Okinawa, multimedia screens in rental cars are utilized to provide feedback on driving conditions through the engaging character, Yui-maru-kun. By providing alerts about identified danger spots in partnership with local police, there has been a notable reduction in accidents and unsafe behaviors. The multilingual interface also caters to international tourists, making it easier for them to navigate safely. Additionally, safe driving practices are linked to improved fuel efficiency.

4. Tackling Traffic Congestion

TMF, leveraging vehicle data from Toyota, aims to identify problem areas prone to traffic congestion. Collaborations with the Okinawa Prefectural Police will facilitate signal adjustments to alleviate bottlenecks. The project recognizes that tourists visiting from Naha to the northern region contribute to congestion. TMF has been proactively suggesting alternate routes and locations that reduce travel time, effectively doubling the number of visitors to Southern tourist spots.

5. Increasing Rental Vehicle Availability

The range of vehicles equipped with the innovative feedback systems will soon be expanded from select locations to around 3,000 rental cars across Okinawa, enhancing driver safety and awareness.

Conclusion

The continual success of the Okinawa Yui-maru Project exemplifies the collaboration between multiple stakeholders aimed at enhancing transport safety and enriching the tourism experience. The integrated approach addressing drivers, vehicles, and traffic infrastructure is crucial for fostering a safer environment. TMF remains committed to implementing broader initiatives to achieve a society free from traffic accidents.

With the encouragement of sustainable tourism and wildlife protection, such as the Yambaru Crested Ibis and Okinawa's native mice, TMF strives to promote a rich, interconnected community centered around safe mobility. Through its ongoing projects, TMF aims to contribute significantly to a safe and vibrant future for Okinawa.
