A Theatrical Gem: The Enchanting 'Black Tulip'
Get ready for an exciting theatrical experience as
Shinjuku Ryozanpaku presents the play
'Black Tulip', a fresh piece penned by renowned playwright
Juro Kara specifically for legendary director
Yukio Ninagawa. This production will take place under a purple tent at the
Hanazono Shrine in Shinjuku, Tokyo, from
April 25 to May 10, 2026.
The Essence of the Play
Originally premiered in
1983 at the PARCO Seibu Theatre, 'Black Tulip' intertwines the distinctive aesthetics and worldviews of both Kara and Ninagawa, creating a mesmerizing narrative that captivates audiences. The current production will be helmed by
Jin Kanemori, an acclaimed director who has gained recognition for his dynamic storytelling, including his award-winning work '
Shitaya Mannencho Monogatari' in 2022.
Synopsis
The narrative follows
Echo, an unsuccessful impersonator, as he enters a bustling pachinko parlor filled with clamor and distraction. His quest? To return money he found at a work-related event. In this vibrant setting, he becomes infatuated with a unique pachinko machine, the 'Black Tulip.' As he unintentionally kisses the machine, a series of events unfold when
Keiko, the machine's rightful owner, enters the scene. For Keiko, that money is crucial to securing her sister
Nobuko's release from prison.
Nobuko, once in love with a florist named
Haruta, had attempted to create something beautiful—a 'Black Tulip.' Tragically, her dreams were shattered when she discovered Haruta's infidelity. This led to an unfortunate incident that landed Nobuko behind bars, becoming a recluse unwilling to step outside. Keiko implores Haruta to assist in her sister’s release, but he is now entangled with another fiancée. In a shocking twist of fate, Haruta destroys Nobuko's carefully cultivated tulip bulbs, leading Keiko to confront him with her anger.
However, a calming influence from the newly released Nobuko redirects the escalating tension, but Keiko soon finds herself in police custody. Days later, she unexpectedly crosses paths with Echo once more, leading to an intriguing climax.
