Okayama University's Commitment to Education Excellence

On January 22, 2026, Okayama University held its second External Evaluation Committee meeting of the 7th year, aimed at achieving the educational goals set out in the 4th midterm plan. This report details the discussions and insights shared during this significant event, which took place at the university's Tsushima Campus.

The meeting, which was structured in two parts—morning and afternoon—was chaired by Yoshio Taniguchi, a respected emeritus professor from Kyushu University. The primary objective was to evaluate the university's progress based on self-assessments and evidence presented during the sessions.

Morning Session: Reflecting on Progress

The day began with opening remarks from Yukari Mimura, a board member responsible for planning, evaluation, and general affairs. Subsequently, Makoto Sugano, another board member focused on educational matters, provided an overview of the university’s plans and their implementation status. He specifically highlighted initiatives like the restructuring of undergraduate education, dubbed Target 2025, which had been launched in the previous year.

The committee engaged actively in discussions, raising questions and exchanging opinions about the previously highlighted tasks that needed to be addressed. Yoshio Taniguchi's closing remarks for the morning session acknowledged the impressive activities reported for the year. He emphasized the importance of broadening participation among faculty in educational and reform initiatives across the university.

Afternoon Session: Planning Ahead

The afternoon session shifted focus to the upcoming 4-year termination evaluations that the national university corporation would undergo. Sugano elaborated on the achievements from fiscal years 2024 to 2027, including those expected for the next evaluation cycle, touching on topics such as student admissions, undergraduate education, graduate education, and educational management.

After a thorough review of each plan, ample time was allotted for questioning, allowing committee members to express their reflections and suggestions. Taniguchi reiterated the need to preserve what has been established as a foundation for future development, stressing the importance of continuity in educational improvements and planning.

Continuous Improvement: The Key to Success

The feedback obtained served to reinforce the self-assessments conducted by the university prior to the committee meetings. This acknowledgment is crucial for maintaining the educational management strategies that Okayama University has put into practice since the 3rd period to reliably enhance learning and education.

As part of the continuous improvement cycle, the institution aims to validate and enhance its initiatives directed towards fulfilling the 4th midterm goals over the next two years, while also preparing for the 5th period. Okayama University takes pride in being a research university with distinct local characteristics, and it remains committed to fulfilling its educational objectives in the years ahead.

In conclusion, as Okayama University forges ahead with its plans, it seeks to engage more faculty members in educational reforms that will not only benefit the institution but also positively impact the community and future generations of students. The university's strategic direction aligns with its vision of serving as a cornerstone for sustainable development and educational excellence, underpinning its dedication to nurturing future leaders through innovative academic practices.
