Exploring the Birth of Digital Sports: Cyber KASSEN Experience at Shukutoku Sugamo High School

The Birth of Digital Sports: Cyber KASSEN Experience

On July 23, 2026, a unique experience in digital sports took place at Shukutoku Sugamo High School in Toshima, Tokyo. Organized by the All Japan Sassen Federation, the event centered around the next-generation digital sport known as Cyber KASSEN, designed to unite technology and physical activity.

Event Overview

The session was held in two time slots: from 9:00 to 10:30 AM and from 11:00 to 12:30 PM, accommodating approximately 40 students in each class. The first half of each session featured a presentation lasting about 20 minutes that explained the origins of Cyber KASSEN and how digital technology is integrated into this innovative sport. Following the presentation, students donned the Cyber KASSEN devices to experience the sport firsthand.

Transitioning from Learning to Experiencing

The initial part of the lesson was dedicated to educating students about the background and mechanics behind Cyber KASSEN. This game is an evolutionary extension of SASSEN, a one-on-one digital swordplay, transformed into a team-based format that allows numerous participants to engage simultaneously. By utilizing sensors and applications, Cyber KASSEN introduces gameplay elements such as real-time decision-making, dramatic presentation, and immediate scoring into traditional physical activity.

At the heart of this educational experience was the goal of not just having fun but understanding the relationship between sport and technology. By discussing important concepts like the reasoning behind the sport’s creation and its technological applications, students could appreciate the depth beyond mere recreation.

Engaging Activities and Team Dynamics

In the latter half of the session, students participated actively by using the Cyber KASSEN devices. The game involves wearing sensors on the arms and maneuvering to protect one’s device while engaging in a dynamic team competition. Participants were not only required to be physically active but also to display strategic thinking, adapt to their surroundings, and coordinate with teammates.

Each period involved switching participants, allowing all 40 students the chance to engage with Cyber KASSEN. The unique characteristic of Cyber KASSEN lies in its blend of physical action with digital technology; it’s not limited to a screen but involves moving, dodging, attacking, and collaborating with others. This approach to education emphasizes a more integrated form of learning, where both theoretical knowledge and physical application coalesce.

By merging traditional teaching with an interactive experience, Cyber KASSEN exemplifies a new method of learning that combines digital technology and sports within school settings.

Continuing the Journey

The All Japan Sassen Federation aims to further collaborate with educational institutions to provide more opportunities for students to experience technology through sports. By showcasing the engaging aspects of Cyber KASSEN and SASSEN, the Federation is committed to promoting physical activity in conjunction with digital advancements among children and adults alike.

What is Cyber KASSEN?

Cyber KASSEN is a next-generation team-based digital sport that employs wearable sensor devices and a dedicated app. Participants equip sensors on both arms and utilize foam swords to target opponents’ devices. Upon receiving an attack, the device reacts with lights and sounds, while the app updates in real time. The rules can be adapted for various group dynamics, allowing for team competitions, survival-style games, and leader battles.

This innovative sport is not confined to classrooms; it finds application in children's events, corporate training, local gatherings, and commercial facilities.
