Rural Voice Returns for a New Season
As the leaves begin to change in Greater Minnesota, so too does the conversation surrounding its rural communities. The popular town hall series,
Rural Voice, is set to return this September for its fourth season, bringing with it a renewed focus on some of the most pressing issues facing these areas, including immigration, mental health, healthcare, and tribal rights.
Engaging Community Dialogue
This innovative platform is committed to elevating local voices and encouraging civic engagement through constructive dialogue. The
2025 season will feature a series of free, in-person town halls across various cities including Cloquet, Willmar, Wadena, and Owatonna. Each event is designed to provoke thought and inspire community-led discussions that can lead to actionable solutions. Moderated by
Kerri Miller of Minnesota Public Radio (MPR), these sessions promise to bring depth and insight into issues that are often overlooked in broader conversations.
Key Topics of Discussion
1.
Tribal Rights - Kicking off the series on
September 3 at the Fond du Lac Community College in Cloquet, the first discussion will delve into the complexities surrounding tribal sovereignty and the challenges faced by Indigenous communities in Minnesota.
2.
Immigration - On
September 8, the focus will shift to immigration at the Foxhole Brewhouse in Willmar. This session aims to discuss how immigration has shaped the lives and dynamics of rural Minnesota, emphasizing its positive contributions while addressing concerns.
3.
Mental Health and Social Isolation - Set for
September 15 at Drastic Measures Brewing in Wadena, this conversation will explore the often stigmatized topic of mental health in rural areas, shedding light on issues of social isolation that have become even more pronounced post-pandemic.
4.
Rural Healthcare - Finally, on
September 29 at the Mineral Springs Brewery in Owatonna, the town hall will address rural healthcare and mental health services. Participants will discuss the accessibility challenges and the efforts to improve health outcomes in underserved areas.
A Growing Community Platform
Since its inception in
2022, Rural Voice has visited over a dozen communities, effectively gathering narratives and solutions from the heart of rural Minnesota. Co-founded by Tim Penny and Kerri Miller, the series is supported by the
Minnesota Initiative Foundations and sponsored by the
Margaret A. Cargill Philanthropies. As noted by Tim Penny, the mission is clear: amplify the stories and solutions that emerge from these rural areas, fostering a sense of unity and understanding.
Kerri Miller adds, "Rural communities are filled with nuanced, intelligent, and engaged people whose stories need to be told. This season we anticipate broader participation and engagement from more communities and an even wider array of topics that are vital to the rural experience."

Rural Voice invites all interested parties to register for the in-person events or view them live.
