reDesign Unveils 2025 National Youth Survey: Prioritizing Essential Skills for Today's Learners

reDesign Unveils 2025 National Youth Survey

On January 22, 2025, reDesign, an organization dedicated to promoting competency-based education, kicked off its 2025 National Youth Survey. This significant initiative aims to gauge which skills young adults aged 16 to 22 deem essential for success in school and beyond. By directly involving youth voices, reDesign seeks to build a more complete understanding of the skills that are not just beneficial but necessary in today’s rapidly evolving landscape.

Understanding the Future9 Competencies

The survey is grounded in reDesign's Future9 Competencies—nine essential skills identified as crucial for educational success. These competencies are crafted from extensive research focusing on cognitive, behavioral, and social-emotional development. Additionally, they reflect the input from varied communities, the demands of the workforce, and the expectations of higher education institutions.

Antonia Rudenstine, Executive Director of reDesign, stated, "The growing consensus among major organizations, including OECD and UNICEF, emphasizes the importance of certain competencies in education. However, it’s pivotal to hear the perspectives of young people currently navigating these systems. This survey aims to fill that gap and provide essential insights into their educational experiences."

The Survey Process

Participants in the survey will be asked to consider their experiences and the opportunities they have had to develop valuable skills. The survey will also capture their views on which skills they believe should be prioritized in educational settings. It takes about nine minutes to complete and is open until February 15, 2025. Young people interested in participating can find the survey on reDesign's official website.

Moreover, as an incentive, respondents will have a chance to win a gift card upon completing the survey. The initiative encourages not only students who are currently enrolled in school but also those involved in community learning programs or workplaces. Parents or guardians must provide consent for participants under 18.

Why This Matters

The importance of this survey cannot be overstated. As today’s job market becomes increasingly competitive and complex, understanding the skills that young people find valuable is essential for educators and policymakers. The aggregate results of the survey will be shared with the competency-based education community, contributing to the ongoing national dialogue about the relevance of educational experiences and the essential skills young adults should acquire.

Through survey findings, reDesign aims to inform educators and institutions about the skills that young individuals regard as useful, ensuring that educational programs are aligned with real-world needs. This connection between educational experiences and workforce requirements is crucial to prepare young adults for their future careers.

Join the Conversation

Adults in various sectors, including educators and community leaders, are encouraged to share the survey link with young individuals in their networks. By participating, youth not only advocate for their educational needs but also play a critical role in shaping future educational policies and practices.
