Moldova Celebrates Guinness World Record for Largest Human Grapevine at Wine Day
Moldova's Grand Achievement at National Wine Day
On October 3, 2026, Moldova made history by setting a new Guinness World Record for the largest human image of a grapevine, celebrated during the 25th National Wine Day. The event took place in the heart of Chisinau, specifically at the iconic Great National Assembly Square, where 493 participants came together to create this stunning visual representation of one of the country's most cherished traditions.
A Celebration of Unity and Tradition
The organization behind this monumental record attempt was the National Office for Vine and Wine, representing the national brand, Wine of Moldova. This year's event theme was 'United by Wine', perfectly encapsulating the spirit of togetherness and celebration surrounding Moldova's rich viticultural heritage. Participants embodied various parts of the grapevine including its roots, trunk, branches, and clusters of grapes, creating a truly immersive and interactive experience for everyone involved. The human grapevine spanned an impressive length of around 39 meters, designed meticulously to comply with the strict guidelines set by Guinness World Records.
Coordination and Execution
The record-setting attempt was not just about numbers; it was an operation that required extensive planning and coordination. Each of the 493 participants was individually registered and given a fixed position to ensure accuracy. Creative use of colorful clothing allowed for clear visual distinctions among the different elements of the grapevine, ensuring that the formation was easily recognizable from the air. To maintain the integrity of the count, QR code scanning was employed, which helped confirm individual participation and prevented any double counting.
Participants held their positions for approximately 15 minutes while Guinness judges assessed the formation against over 30 detailed criteria. These included compliance with the pre-approved design, participant placement, size, and the required photographic and video evidence for verifications.
Record Confirmation
The momentous occasion was officially recognized by Pravin Patel, a judge from Guinness World Records, marking a significant highlight in Moldova's National Wine Day festivities. Following the record confirmation, Stefan Iamandi, director of the National Office for Vine and Wine, expressed the pride and joy the event brought to the nation, calling it the best gift for the anniversary of the Wine Day. He noted, "Hundreds of individuals came together to form a single grapevine, symbolizing our winemaking traditions and visually expressing this year's message, 'United by Wine.'"
A Growing Celebration
In addition to setting this world record, the anniversary edition witnessed unprecedented participation. A total of 114 wineries showcased their products, and over 14,000 tasting brochures were sold, reflecting a remarkable 50% increase over the previous year. Visitors from over 70 countries traveled to take part in this vibrant cultural event, further emphasizing Moldova's standing in the global wine industry.
Looking Forward
The National Wine Day is Moldova's largest annual event dedicated to promoting the national wine brand, "Wine of Moldova. Unexpectedly Great." The next celebration is already in the works, scheduled for October 2-3, 2027, promising even more excitement and opportunities for wine lovers to come together and experience the richness of Moldovan wine culture.
Through endeavors like these, Moldova not only celebrates its long-standing traditions but also enhances its international image, inviting the world to share in its wine heritage.
