Taiwan's Creative Showcase: Island Under Pressure
The Taiwan Pavilion debuted its innovative exhibition titled
Island Under Pressure during Dutch Design Week 2026, held from October 17 to 25 in Eindhoven, Netherlands. This initiative shines a spotlight on how Taiwan turns environmental challenges and geopolitical tensions into a fountain of creativity that inspires design.
The exhibition, organized by Taiwan's Industrial Development Administration and the Department of Industrial Technology under the Ministry of Economic Affairs, showcases a diverse array of projects created by talented designers, material specialists, and manufacturers. Curated by Yen-An Chen, the founder of Atelier YenAn, the display uniquely illustrates the interplay between Taiwan's industrial landscape and its natural environment.
Five Forces of Creativity
Drawing upon five interconnected pressures—geopolitical, agricultural, climate, industrial, and production—the exhibition reveals how limitations can inspire innovation. Each project within the showcase presents a fresh perspective on the relationship between Taiwan's landscape, its industries, and the everyday objects we use. Here are some notable highlights:
1.
From Military Waste to Writing Instruments: Designers Rosa Cuei and Swei Huang, in collaboration with production partner TONG.LE, have ingeniously repurposed discarded artillery shells into writing tools, encouraging viewers to contemplate the implications of geopolitical hostilities.
2.
From Flood Sediments to Ceramics: Lulu Lin, in partnership with Hong-Yan Pottery Studio, transforms sediments from flood-affected areas into beautiful ceramic works, symbolizing resilience amid environmental disruption.
3.
Electronics into Design: KIMU, alongside SUPER DRAGON TECHNOLOGY CO., LTD., breathes new life into discarded electronic circuit boards, turning them into composite materials that bridge technology and contemporary design.
4.
Innovative Textiles from Agriculture: DYCTEAM collaborates with 496 Fabric Lab and TUCHEN TEXTILE Co., Ltd. to explore the potential of pineapple leaf fibers and recycled textiles, crafting these into innovative fabrics and clothing for everyday wear.
5.
Sculptural Forms from Stone Processing Waste: Ting-Hsuan Chang, in association with Techome Technology Co., Ltd., reimagines waste from stone processing, creating sculptural forms that challenge traditional production methods.
Additionally, two projects selected for the prestigious Golden Pin Design Award illustrate how sustainability can lead to creative solutions: one project reclaims discarded fishing nets to create repairable eyewear, and the other processes shells from the Asian basket clam into eco-friendly cleaning products.
Beyond Sustainability
Island Under Pressure is not just about achieving sustainability—it's about fostering a unique Taiwanese design identity that intertwines production expertise with creativity and material exploration. The exhibition represents a shift from products marked 'Made in Taiwan' to those labeled 'Designed in Taiwan', highlighting the country's rich design heritage.
On October 19, the EHV Innovation Café will also host a panel of experts from the design and industrial sectors to discuss how experimentation can lead to real-world applications, amplifying the exhibition's purpose.
