Waseda University Establishes Interdisciplinary Research Institute for Ballet Studies

Waseda University Sets Up the Interdisciplinary Research Institute for Ballet Studies

In a groundbreaking move, Waseda University, located in Shinjuku, Tokyo, officially inaugurated the Interdisciplinary Research Institute for Ballet Studies as part of its comprehensive research initiative on October 1, 2026. This new institute aims to serve as a collaborative hub where world-renowned ballet dancers, choreographers, musicians, and researchers from the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences can come together to explore the multifaceted nature of ballet as a performing art.

The institute seeks to break away from traditional ballet research that often relies on detached analysis. Instead, it intends to foster an environment where live practitioners, including professional dancers and instructors, actively participate in research alongside academics. This unique collaboration between practical knowledge and scholarly understanding aims to create new insights and discoveries in the field of ballet.

A Collaborative Space for Practitioners and Scholars

One of the main objectives of the institute is to integrate the experiential knowledge of ballet practitioners with the foundational academic insights derived from research. Many previous studies have strictly adhered to outside observation and objective analysis, failing to capture the essence of the dancer's experience. The institute's framework encourages a dynamic interchange between dancers and researchers, facilitating dialogue and collaboration that leads to richer understandings of ballet.

Throughout its establishment, the Interdisciplinary Research Institute will not limit itself to specific disciplines but will instead exploit Waseda University’s unique ability to promote interdisciplinary research that spans various fields. Participants not only include researchers from the Faculty of Human Sciences and the Faculty of Sport Sciences but also contemporary dancers and musicians who are making their marks domestically and globally.

Among the researchers involved are experts in humanities, such as philosophy and history, social sciences like education and psychology, and natural sciences focusing on bodily movement and cognition. This way, the ballet research carried out will transcend conventional boundaries, allowing for innovative approaches and methodologies.

A Hub for Professional Dancers to Learn

Currently, Waseda University’s online Human Sciences department hosts a significant number of professional ballet dancers from around the world. These students have the chance to deepen their understanding of bodily expression, education, culture, and human sciences while maintaining their professional careers. Some students have chosen to continue their research post-graduation as invited researchers at the institute.

Notable participants include:
  • - Yumiko Okano, a graduate from 2025, associated with the Polish National Ballet as an invited researcher at the institute.
  • - Hana Okudaira, a 2026 graduate from the Romanian National Theatre in Timișoara, also an invited researcher.
  • - Reimi Nakano, a current student and former member of the Sibiu Theatre Ballet.

The institute is poised to open new horizons for aspiring young dancers and students wishing to pursue ballet while continuing their education.

Director's Comments

Akito Miura, the Vice-Director of the Interdisciplinary Research Institute for Ballet Studies, shared his vision for the new institute: "Our goal is to deepen the understanding of humanity through ballet, where body and mind, culture and society intersect. The most distinguishing aspect of our institute is the collaboration between top-performing dancers and researchers, allowing for a convergence of practical experiences and academic insights. We aim to cultivate a research hub that enriches both scholarship and practice, creating valuable knowledge that can benefit both practitioners and the younger generation contemplating their career paths in ballet."

The establishment of this institute reflects a vibrant future for ballet research, emphasizing the importance of a collaborative approach that bridges the gap between artistry and academia. By promoting interdisciplinary dialogue, the Interdisciplinary Research Institute for Ballet Studies hopes to inspire not only the current generation of ballet professionals but also the many who will follow in their footsteps.
