Global Energy Association Announces Finalists for 2026 Energy Prize



On June 10, 2026, the Global Energy Association revealed the names of the finalists for the prestigious Global Energy Prize 2026. This annual award recognizes exceptional contributions to the energy sector, celebrating innovative advancements and research that promise to transform the landscape of energy generation and consumption.

The finalists hail from nine different countries including Chile, China, Cyprus, India, Mexico, Russia, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States. This year, 15 distinguished scientists have been nominated across three main categories: Traditional Energy, Non-Traditional Energy, and New Applications of Energy.

Overview of the Selection Process



The selection process for the Global Energy Prize involves multiple stages. The first phase ran from January 1 to April 20, 2026, allowing representatives from 30 countries to submit nominees, resulting in diverse participation from 28 countries. Following this comprehensive selection phase, the highest-scoring nominees were shortlisted, leading to the final list announced today.

The award ceremony will be presided over by Rae Kwon Chung, a Nobel laureate, who will lead the international committee responsible for selecting the ultimate winners from this year's finalists. Chung expressed confidence in the caliber of research presented, stating, “This year's finalist list reflects the vast realm of modern energy science. I believe many of the projects proposed will significantly impact global energy development in the coming decade. I commend all scientists listed among the finalists.”

Traditional Energy


1. Yilu Liu (USA) - Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Tennessee.
2. Amit Goyal (USA) - Founding Director of the RENEW Institute at the State University of New York in Buffalo.
3. Haisheng Chen (China) - Director of the Institute of Engineering Thermophysics at the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
4. Jorge Ancheyta-Juarez (Mexico) - Professor at the National Polytechnic Institute of Mexico.
5. Alexander Batanov (Russia) - Director and Chief Designer at the Applied Robotics Design and Technology Bureau.

Non-Traditional Energy


1. Bhim Singh (India) - Emeritus Professor at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi.
2. Soteris Kalogirou (Cyprus) - Professor at the Cyprus University of Technology.
3. Yushan Yan (USA) - Director of the Clean Hydrogen Center at the University of Delaware.
4. Josep M. Guerrero (China) - Researcher at the Renewable Energy and Microgrid Research Center at Zhejiang University.
5. José H. Zagal Moya (Chile) - Emeritus Professor and Director at the Electrochemistry Laboratory at the University of Santiago.

New Applications of Energy


1. Johann W. Kolar (Switzerland) - Emeritus Professor at ETH Zurich in Information Technologies and Electrical Engineering.
2. Jun Liu (USA) - Director of the Innovation Center at the Battery500 Consortium, Battelle Fellow at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.
3. Yulong Ding (UK) - Founder of the Chamberlain Chair of Chemical Engineering at the University of Birmingham.
4. William A. Goddard (USA) - Director at the Materials and Processes Simulation Center at the California Institute of Technology.
5. Laura Gagliardi (USA) - Professor of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering at the University of Chicago.
