Breaking Barriers: A Movement for Accessible Buildings in Japan

Breaking Barriers: A Movement for Accessible Buildings in Japan

In an inspiring initiative, the nonprofit organization Wheelog, led by its director Yuriko Oda, is undertaking a critical movement to demand that all newly constructed buildings adhere to the standard of zero barriers starting from March 5, 2026. This movement aims to create a world where the need for accessibility is recognized and acted upon, ensuring that no one needs to compromise their experience due to physical barriers.

The Need for Change: A Haunting Reality

Currently, in Japan, about one in three newly built establishments—including restaurants, convenience stores, and salons—have steps at their entrances. This presents a significant challenge for those using wheelchairs or dealing with mobility impairments. While large-scale buildings exceeding 2,000 square meters are mandated to be barrier-free, smaller establishments are only encouraged to make their premises accessible due to existing building regulations. Therefore, many individuals are left unable to enter these spaces, regardless of how new they may be.

Once a building is constructed, it lasts for over 50 years, effectively storing and perpetuating these barriers for future generations. If we don't alter the building codes today, we risk leaving behind a legacy of inaccessibility for those who come after us.

Our Proposal: Accessibility for All

The aim of Wheelog is unwavering; we advocate for two essential criteria for all new constructions:
1. Entrances with No Barriers: Ensuring that everyone can enter without facing physical obstacles.
2. Functional Space: Inside, the environment must be usable for all, eliminating barriers to functionality.
