Grand Canyon University Celebrates Unprecedented Approval for New Law College in Arizona

In a groundbreaking development for legal education in Arizona, Grand Canyon University (GCU) has secured unanimous approval from the Arizona Supreme Court for its new College of Law. This momentous decision, announced on October 16, 2026, marks a significant milestone not only for GCU but also for aspiring legal professionals across the state.

With the Arizona Supreme Court granting this historic authorization, GCU's College of Law becomes the first of its kind to receive such a nod from the state’s highest court. As a result, graduates from this institution will now have a streamlined pathway to earn their licensure as attorneys in Arizona, provided they meet all other licensing prerequisites, including passing the bar exam and adhering to character and fitness requirements. This clears a previously challenging hurdle for students aspiring to enter the legal profession in the state.

Chief Justice Ann A. Scott Timmer expressed her excitement, emphasizing the urgent need for more legal professionals in Arizona. "We are optimistic that GCU will provide an excellent legal education and help meet the need for more lawyers in communities throughout our state," she stated, highlighting the potential impact of GCU’s newly approved program.

Historically, law graduates in Arizona have needed to obtain their Juris Doctor from an American Bar Association (ABA)-accredited institution. This approval allows GCU to operate under a new regulatory framework that offers flexibility and opportunity amidst evolving conditions in legal education. GCU plans to pursue ABA accreditation once it qualifies, thus joining ranks with more traditional law schools in the future.

James L. Williams, the Dean of the College of Law, remarked, "This is a historic moment for Grand Canyon University... We are grateful for the Arizona Supreme Court's willingness to consider an innovative approach to legal education." He expressed a commitment to maintaining high standards while demonstrating how this new pathway to licensure can coexist with academic and ethical excellence.

The mission of GCU's College of Law will center on preparing attorneys who are equipped not only with legal expertise but also with a strong sense of responsibility to their communities. This approach aligns with GCU's broader educational philosophy, which integrates a Christian worldview with free-market principles. The school’s mission is to nurture a generation of legal advocates who uphold justice and protect individual liberties while serving the common good.

President Brian Mueller articulated the vision further: “The American legal system was profoundly influenced by Judeo-Christian principles... Our nation’s founders understood that liberty cannot flourish without virtue.” This perspective will serve as a guiding principle for students and faculty alike, fostering a community of legal professionals committed to ethical practices and community service.

Under the guidelines established by the Arizona Supreme Court, GCU's College of Law will operate with ongoing oversight, ensuring that it meets the state's criteria for legal education and professional preparation. The Court has indicated its intention to evaluate the effectiveness of these distinct standards through GCU’s program, indicating a cautious approach to future approvals for non-ABA-accredited law schools.

Mueller expressed gratitude for the opportunity provided to GCU, stating, “We embrace the accountability and oversight that come with the responsibility, and we are committed to establishing a College of Law that earns the confidence of the Court, the legal profession, and the students and families who place their trust in us.”

As Grand Canyon University moves forward with plans to open its College of Law in 2027, it has already received approval from the Arizona Board for Private Postsecondary Education and will soon seek accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission.

With the introduction of this innovative law school, Grand Canyon University not only seeks to fulfill an educational need within Arizona but also aspires to shape the future of legal education that resonates with both academic rigor and a commitment to serve others. The College of Law is poised to become a notable fixture in Arizona’s legal landscape, opening doors for countless students eager to make their mark in the field of law.
