oneworld and Member Airlines Unite Against Illegal Wildlife Trade

In a remarkable display of unity, oneworld®, along with its 15 member airlines, has pledged to fight against the illegal wildlife trade by signing the Buckingham Palace Declaration (BPD). This momentous act makes oneworld the first airline alliance to collectively commit to this global initiative, aimed at disrupting the criminal networks that facilitate wildlife trafficking.

The declaration was signed by Samer Majali, the President and CEO of Royal Jordanian Airlines, during the IATA’s Wings of Change Europe event held in Brussels. This significant step reinforces the essential role that aviation plays in protecting endangered species and safeguarding global ecosystems. According to Olé Orvér, the CEO of oneworld, “The unwavering commitment from all our members greatly enhances our ability to identify and disrupt trafficking activities, contributing significantly to the fight against the illegal wildlife commerce.”

Wildlife trafficking, unfortunately, represents a burgeoning segment of the broader environmental criminal economy and is among the fastest-growing forms of organized crime globally. These illicit activities rely heavily on transportation networks and global supply chains to move illegal goods. Environmental crime also poses a significant threat to biodiversity, leading to economic losses that exceed $1 trillion annually.

The Buckingham Palace Declaration was initiated by United for Wildlife (UfW) of the Royal Foundation, uniting the transport and logistics sectors to help close down routes exploited by traffickers. The pledge taken by oneworld and its members aims to enhance policies, improve detection and reporting, and support global enforcement efforts within the alliance’s network, which spans nearly 1,000 destinations.

The signing of this declaration is a noteworthy advancement in the global efforts against wildlife trafficking. Lord William Hague, Co-Chair of United for Wildlife, expressed his satisfaction with the ongoing momentum, stating, “We are pleased to see this progress with new signatories reinforcing global endeavors to prevent and disrupt wildlife trafficking. We welcome the oneworld family, representing 15 airlines, into the working group.”

By signing the Buckingham Palace Declaration, oneworld aligns itself with a global effort that strengthens the aviation sector's ability to deter and detect wildlife crime through collaboration with law enforcement and conservation partners.

The member airlines have agreed to implement measures that include the following:
  • - Adopting a zero-tolerance approach to illegal wildlife trade.
  • - Improving monitoring, reporting, and compliance processes in both passenger and cargo operations.
  • - Training front-line staff to identify and respond to suspicious activities.
  • - Collaborating with governments, customs authorities, and conservation organizations.

The declaration also reinforces the broader efforts of the United for Wildlife Transport group, aiding in accelerating a more coordinated and effective global response to illegal wildlife trafficking.
