ALTA Performance Materials Expands Its Reach in South America
On November 6, 2026, ALTA Performance Materials announced a major strategic move by signing a contract to acquire BASF's Palatal business unit located in Chile. This acquisition is designed to enhance ALTA's operational capabilities in South America while aligning with BASF's strategy to focus on its core chemical operations.
The Palatal business, based in Concón, Chile, specializes in providing customers in various sectors including construction, mining, aquaculture, transport, and industrial applications with advanced vinylester and unsaturated polyester resins. With a robust established customer base and a team well-versed in the South American market, the Palatal operation is well-positioned for continued growth under ALTA's management.
Strengthening Regional Production Capacity
By acquiring Palatal, ALTA Performance Materials aims to consolidate its production resources and technical expertise, responding effectively to the evolving demands of the composite materials industry. This move adds a second production site in Latin America, allowing ALTA to better support its customers with local supply, enhanced technical assistance, and an expanded range of high-performance materials.
Andrew Miller, the CEO of ALTA Performance Materials, expressed his enthusiasm for the acquisition, stating, "South America is a critical market for ALTA Performance Materials and this contract represents a significant step to strengthen our presence in the region. Palatal is an established operation with a respected regional brand and product offerings complemented by valuable technical expertise. By merging this experience with our capabilities, we can provide our customers with improved materials and support services. We look forward to collaborating with the Palatal team and building on our prior successes."
BASF’s Strategic Focus
Ronaldo Freitas Junior, responsible for M&A transactions at BASF Chile, emphasized BASF's strategy to concentrate on its core chemical businesses. He asserts that ALTA Performance Materials is the right partner for fostering the future growth of Palatal.
