Insights into Effective Workplace Training Implementation
In recent research conducted by NEWONE Co., Ltd., a consultancy specializing in organizational development and employee engagement here in Tokyo, participants from 55 companies totaling 3,344 individuals were surveyed after undergoing various training sessions from August to October 2025. The results, made public on January 27, 2026, aim to uncover what characteristics lead to participants believing they can translate their training into workplace practices.
Background of the Research
As businesses expand their investment in workforce development, the satisfaction ratings for training programs have generally been high. However, many employees voice concerns about their ability to implement the learned skills in their daily jobs. NEWONE's report seeks to analyze the reasons behind this gap, focusing on conditions that foster the belief that one can effectively use their training at work.
The evaluation utilized a framework developed by Kirkpatrick, assessing training satisfaction, learning retention, and anticipated applicability of skills in the workplace. This report emphasizes the significance of an individual's environment at work and personal circumstances in fostering an expectation for practical application post-training.
Key Insights from the Report
1. Variability by Training Theme
The results indicated that perceptions of a supportive workplace environment varied significantly based on the training theme undertaken. For instance, participants involved in career development training felt that their sense of achievement and growth, along with alignment with the company's mission and vision, directly influenced their confidence in applying their learning.
In leadership training, factors like support during difficult situations and trust with supervisors emerged as significant predictors of participants’ expectations of applying their training at work. Similarly, organizational development training highlighted the importance of multiple factors contributing to a supportive environment, such as psychological safety and trust in leadership.
2. Influence of Employee Level
The report also categorized results by employee rank, revealing different motivational factors based on their tier. For managerial levels, the presence of perceived growth felt strongly impacted their expectation to utilize learned skills. Conversely, lower-level employees placed importance on opportunities for personal contributions and a shared understanding of the company's direction, reinforcing their drive to implement their training.
3. Industry-Specific Challenges
Furthermore, an industry analysis showcased disparate perceptions of workplace support. For example, employees in the information and communications sector did not report significant differences from the average but demonstrated lower engagement with the company's mission and vision. On the other hand, the service sector highlighted specific challenges with established workplace relationships and perceived psychological safety, which may hinder the outcome of training.
Next Steps
Looking ahead, NEWONE aims to continuously track the conditions and behaviors of training participants to redefine the relationship between training and workplace application. The company has also provided samples of their analysis for each participating organization to aid in formulating HR strategies. This approach ensures they remain committed to fostering “workplaces that employees can endorse,” leading to shared growth and contributions.
