Innovative Faroe Islands Space Program Harnesses Tidal Energy Without Leaving Earth
The Faroe Islands' Unique Space Program
In a world where nations compete to venture beyond our atmosphere, the Faroe Islands take an extraordinary leap into the realm of space exploration—yet their ambitions never actually leave the ground. While space agencies are on their way to the Moon and Mars, this audacious initiative stems from the collaboration between two innovative companies: the Swedish bearing manufacturer SKF and the ocean energy developer Minesto.
The project's audacity lies in its commitment to harnessing the energy of the Moon by tapping into the ocean's tides right here on Earth. Annika Ölme, the CTO at SKF, expresses excitement about the program, stating, "Imagine a future powered by the tides of the Moon. This unique project dares to dream big and explore the potential of renewable tidal energy."
Over the past year, the duo has made significant strides in developing tidal energy through the use of tidal kites located in the Atlantic Sea off the coast of the Faroe Islands. Their primary goal is to leverage lunar power for the generation of sustainable energy. The first of its kind, named LUNA, operates beneath the waves, working silently and invisibly to harvest energy without interruption, regardless of weather conditions.
Currently, only a small number of nations are beginning to utilize the extraordinary potential of energy generated from lunar tides, which is regarded as one of the most reliable sources of renewable energy.
Martin Edlund, CEO of Minesto, highlights the program's expansive potential, estimating that there are at least 3,000 similar
