Over 90% of Companies Prioritize Employee Satisfaction Yet Struggle to Implement Effective Strategies

Recent research conducted by G-Boon Co., Ltd., a company based in Koto, Tokyo, reveals crucial insights into how Japanese firms perceive and handle employee satisfaction. The survey involved 469 business leaders from companies with more than 50 employees and highlighted the ever-growing importance of employee satisfaction as a key business challenge in a context marked by labor shortages and difficulty in employee retention.

Survey Background

Historically, managing human capital has become increasingly important in the face of these challenges. The need to improve employee satisfaction is now closely tied to sustainable business growth. However, despite a widespread acknowledgment of its importance, many companies have not effectively translated their recognition into practical, actionable strategies.

Conducted between March 27 and March 30, 2026, this survey not only assessed business leaders' awareness of the importance of employee satisfaction but also their capability to implement effective measures. It aimed to uncover whether businesses genuinely integrate employee satisfaction into their management practices.

Key Findings

  • - Importance of Employee Satisfaction: About 90% of the companies prioritized improving employee satisfaction as a crucial business challenge. When asked about the importance, 52.7% regarded it as very important, while 36.5% found it somewhat important. Only 8.3% considered it as less important.

  • - Reflecting Employee Satisfaction in Business Decisions: Among those who acknowledged its importance, 82.3% claimed to have incorporated employee satisfaction into their management decisions, with 60.5% doing so to an extent and 21.8% fully integrating it into their decision-making processes. This indicates a strong recognition of the link between employee satisfaction and overall business health.

  • - Implementation of Specific Practices: Interestingly, around 18.7% of companies still do not execute any concrete measures aimed at improving satisfaction, primarily due to competing priorities or lack of resources – with 41% citing other urgent business challenges as reasons for not acting.

  • - Strategies Undertaken: For those actively working on enhancing satisfaction, a notable 71.2% reported strengthening their employee benefits programs as a primary strategy. Other common approaches included conducting employee satisfaction surveys and improving office environments.

  • - Perceptions of Effectiveness: Alarmingly, over 85% of the companies that actively implement strategies feel these efforts have not yielded satisfactory results. Many indicated that while they recognize the importance of these measures, the actual outcomes fall short of expectations.

Conclusion

The survey underscores a paradox in business culture: a high degree of emphasis on employee satisfaction contrasted with a pronounced struggle to develop effective measures. G-Boon's findings illustrate that while approximately 90% of enterprises view enhancing employee satisfaction as an essential management issue, over 80% of them cannot translate this acknowledgment into effective practices. Furthermore, a significant proportion of organizations identify other challenges as higher priorities, stalling progress on these fronts.
