Healinno Tech® Unveils a Pioneering Ultrasound-Controlled Hybrid Robot for Prostate Biopsy at IROS 2025
In a groundbreaking presentation at the
IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS 2025) in
Hangzhou, China,
Healinno Tech (Beijing) along with the
Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications (BUPT) introduced their cutting-edge research on an
ultrasound-guided serial-parallel hybrid robot tailored for transperineal prostate biopsies. The event witnessed over
7,000 experts and industry representatives gather to exchange insights and innovations in robotics.
The research paper titled “
Ultrasonically Guided Serial-Parallel Hybrid Robot for Transperineal Prostate Biopsy Mechanism Design, Optimization, and Experimental Validation” presented a revolutionary biopsy robot aimed at addressing the clinical challenges of precision control and steep learning curves associated with manual biopsy procedures. The new robotic system integrates a serial-parallel hybrid mechanism featuring
five degrees of freedom, ensuring flexibility and high precision during needle insertion. Notably, the design incorporates two serial manipulators, a linear feeding unit, and a positioning mechanism for the ultrasound probe, making it customizable for various clinical scenarios.
A standout feature of this innovative robot is a novel algorithm known as
Quantum-behaved Particle Swarm Optimization (QPSO). This algorithm is implemented to optimize the robot's mechanical parameters, significantly enhancing its precision. Comparatively, the QPSO algorithm outperformed other widely used optimization techniques, meeting the stringent accuracy requirements crucial for clinical operations. The robot prototype was validated through experiments using water and gelatin phantoms, demonstrating exceptional absolute positioning errors in 3D space with a maximum deviation of only
1.47 mm in water and
1.75 mm in gelatin, clearly within clinical standards.
This outstanding research initiative is supported by various national and municipal scientific projects across China. Healinno Tech is actively working on enhancing the robot's features with advanced functionalities like
dynamic tracking and
breath compensation. These developments are set to pave the way for both clinical implementation and industrial applications, marking a significant step towards the future of medical robotics.
