TIER IV Achieves Milestone with Level 4 Autonomous Driving Permit in Japan

TIER IV Secures Permit for Level 4 Autonomous Driving in Nagano Prefecture

TIER IV, recognized as a trailblazer for the world's first open-source software in autonomous driving, has recently made headlines by receiving a permit for Level 4 operations in Shiojiri, located in Nagano Prefecture, Japan. This pivotal achievement comes as a result of collaboration with local government officials and service operators, reflecting a strong commitment to pioneering autonomous vehicle technology in urban environments.

Having initiated proof of concept tests since 2020, TIER IV has been actively working towards establishing mobility services powered by autonomous driving technology. The journey towards this significant permit began with rigorous testing and certification efforts. In October 2024, TIER IV successfully obtained Level 4 certification under the Road Transport Vehicle Act, which subsequently laid the groundwork for the recent permit granted under the Road Traffic Act.

The newly acquired permit allows TIER IV to deploy its Level 4 autonomous driving system that can handle all dynamic driving tasks by itself, given specific pre-defined conditions. This system is expected to work seamlessly in urban settings, where it will interact with both pedestrians and conventional traffic. The first of these tests will utilize TIER IV's Minibus, which will operate between Shiojiri Station and Shiojiri City Hall.

One of the primary goals of this initiative is to tackle the pressing issue of transportation challenges faced by the region, especially the ongoing driver shortages. By leveraging its proven track record in Level 4 autonomous driving applications, TIER IV aims to revolutionize transportation services in the area and set a solid foundation for future autonomous driving services.

In essence, TIER IV stands at the forefront of technological advancements in the automotive sector. The company is recognized for its innovative contributions through Autoware, which serves as its open-source software framework for autonomous vehicles. This software has enabled the development and scalability of various applications in the growing field of intelligent vehicles. With its position as a founding member of the Autoware Foundation, TIER IV has committed to driving further change in the landscape of autonomous driving technology by supporting individual and organizational growth.

This journey into Level 4 autonomous driving in Shiojiri not only illustrates TIER IV's commitment to innovation but also highlights the potential for autonomous vehicles to enhance urban mobility and address regional transportation issues. As the world continues to embrace autonomous technologies, TIER IV is well-positioned to lead the charge in shaping the future of transportation in Japan and beyond. The significance of this milestone extends beyond mere achievements; it serves as an encouraging sign for other companies and municipalities looking to explore similar opportunities in the realm of autonomous driving technology.
