New Meijer Grocery Store Opens in Livonia
Today marks the grand opening of the new Meijer Grocery store in Livonia, Michigan, a spacious 75,000-square-foot facility designed to enhance the shopping experience for local residents. This new store is particularly significant as it stands as the fifth Meijer Grocery location in the Midwest and the fourth within Michigan, following the recent addition in Rochester Hills earlier this year.
Located at 33500 Seven Mile Road, the Livonia grocery store occupies less than half the space of a traditional Meijer supercenter, allowing customers to enjoy a more focused food shopping experience. Shoppers will find a wide selection of essential categories within the store, including fresh produce, dry grocery items, freshly cut meats, an in-house bakery, a full-service deli, pharmacy, health and beauty products, baby necessities, pet supplies, party goods, cards, and flowers. Additionally, a dedicated section called “Local Favorites” features beloved products from the Southeast Michigan area, such as Grandpapa’s Snacks, Downriver Chips, Faygo Soda, and Better Made Snacks.
Hank Meijer, the chain's CEO, expressed enthusiasm for the new store, highlighting its role in providing greater convenience and value for Livonia residents. He stated, “Our new Meijer Grocery will make it easier for more customers in Livonia to access great value right in their neighborhood.” The store emphasizes quality products at competitive prices, recognizing the growing importance of value for customers.
Among the modern solutions available at the new store are digital shopping tools, including the Shop & Scan feature. This function enables customers to scan items using a mobile app and bag them as they shop, thus streamlining the payment process. Additionally, the store includes significant discounts on surplus food via the Flashfood app, expanded delivery and pickup services, and the mPerks rewards program which allows customers to earn benefits with each dollar spent.
The Livonia Meijer Grocery will also carry popular private-label brands like Frederik's by Meijer and True Goodness. Frederik’s, the chain’s premium brand, offers innovative and authentic flavors, while True Goodness features products crafted consciously and free of more than 100 undesirable ingredients, aiding customers in their everyday decision-making.
During the opening ceremony this morning, store manager Sharron Griffin and her team warmly welcomed customers, culminating in a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The team demonstrated their commitment to the community with a generous donation of $15,000 to Anastasia Katie’s Coffee Shop, a local business supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, as well as to the Breaking Barriers Food Pantry, which combats food insecurity in Livonia by providing nutritious food and essential support services.
Meijer has a longstanding commitment to community support, donating at least 6% of its net profits to local organizations every year. Each store collaborates with local food banks and pantries to fight hunger. Since 2008, the retail chain’s Simply Give hunger relief program has raised over $100 million for food banks across the Midwest. The Livonia store’s initial food bank partner is the Christ Our Savior Lutheran Church, which will receive donations from the chain’s fall campaign running until September 26.
Rick Keyes, President and CEO of Meijer, commented on the company’s commitment to community service, stating, “Supporting the communities we serve is one of our top priorities, and that commitment begins long before a new store opens.” He expressed his excitement about how the new store will enhance local lives, not only by offering a convenient shopping option but also by actively engaging as a committed community partner.
Outside the store, two sculpture gardens have been created to provide customers with a space to relax or meet up with friends. Designed by Michigan artists Erik and Israel Nordin from the Detroit Design Center, the sculptures symbolize the idea that grocery stores are more than just places to shop; they are social hubs where communities gather every day for celebrations, connections, and everyday moments. Each sculpture features intertwined arches representing connection, community, and shared experiences, with vibrant colored glass inspired by fresh fruits and vegetables symbolizing the freshness and abundance that awaits shoppers inside.
In alignment with ongoing efforts to ensure accessibility for all customers, the store features expanded and adjustable-height changing tables in family restrooms for added comfort and dignity for customers with disabilities and their caregivers. Like all Meijer locations, the Livonia store also offers free Aira access, a service that provides real-time navigation assistance for customers who are blind or have low vision, utilizing their smartphone cameras.
