StarKist and Community Partners Unite to Combat Hunger at Summer Food Rally in Northern Virginia

StarKist and Community Partners Unite to Combat Hunger

StarKist, alongside Feed the Children and Cornerstones, hosted the Fourth Annual Summer Food and Resource Rally, addressing food insecurity in Northern Virginia. Held in Reston at Floris United Methodist Church, this initiative aimed to support families in need, as hunger is a pressing issue in this region, where thousands face food shortages.

Making a Direct Impact

Edward Min, President and CEO of StarKist, highlighted the company’s commitment to directly impacting the community by partnering with these organizations. He emphasized the importance of access to affordable, high-quality protein during challenging times. The rally provided over 8,300 meals to approximately 400 local families, with each family receiving a kit that supplies several meals along with household essentials.

The Role of Community and Collaboration

During the rally, community leaders, volunteers, and elected officials came together to tackle the alarming rise of food insecurity in Fairfax County. Kerrie Wilson, CEO of Cornerstones, mentioned that many families who had never needed assistance before are increasingly turning to food pantries. The outreach and support provided during the event reflect a shared determination to alleviate hunger in the community.

Emily Callahan, President of Feed the Children, expressed gratitude for the collaborative effort to end childhood hunger, emphasizing the critical role of partnerships in providing necessary resources. This model of cooperation is vital, as it draws upon the strengths of corporations, nonprofits, and community organizations to foster meaningful solutions.

Continued Efforts Beyond the Rally

Notably, this event is part of a broader program as StarKist plans to extend its outreach with additional Food Resource Rallies in Bentonville, Arkansas, and a collaboration with the Magic Johnson Foundation later this year.

Over the past 16 years, StarKist has significantly contributed to hunger relief, donating over 1.2 million pounds of protein-rich products, worth nearly $4.9 million, to help food-insecure families nationwide. Their ongoing partnership with Feed the Children showcases a steadfast dedication to addressing the root causes of hunger and food scarcity.
