China Literature Reports Significant Growth in 2026 Interim Results

China Literature Limited, a market leader in online literature and intellectual property (IP), released its unaudited consolidated financial results for the first half of 2026, seeing total revenues jump by 10.7% year-over-year. The total revenue reached RMB 3,531.4 million (approximately USD 518.5 million), showcasing the company's resilience in a shifting market landscape dominated by content consumption fragmentation and the rise of AI.

Financial Highlights

Despite an overall revenue increase, the company experienced a 7.3% decline in revenues generated from its online business, which accounted for RMB 1,840.0 million (about USD 270.2 million). In contrast, revenues generated from intellectual property operations grew significantly, by 40.3% to RMB 1,691.4 million (around USD 248.3 million).

Chief Executive Officer Mr. Hou Xiaonan stated that the company is adapting to two pivotal changes in the entertainment industry: the fragmentation of content consumption and the disruptive potential of AI on the content ecosystem. In line with this strategy, China Literature has prioritized strengthening its core competencies while venturing into emerging markets like short dramas and AI-animated dramas.

During the first half of 2026, revenue from short dramas and AI-animated dramas surpassed RMB 430 million, marking an impressive 2.3 times year-over-year increase, and now constitutes 27% of revenues from IP operations. Noteworthy successes include 46 AI-animated titles that each amassed over 100 million views, outpacing most offerings in the industry.

Challenges and Adjustments

On a non-IFRS basis, which offers a clearer picture of core earnings by excluding one-time and non-cash items, profit attributable to equity holders was reported at RMB 258.8 million (USD 38 million), down from RMB 507.8 million in the same period in 2025. This decline can be attributed to RMB 300 million incurred in tax-related payments by a subsidiary. Additionally, the basic earnings per share (EPS) were reported at RMB 0.26, which also reflects the company’s strategic adaptations and financial maneuvers to stay competitive.

Despite these challenges, the company remains optimistic about the overall trajectory of its operations, emphasizing ongoing technology integrations, especially AI. The initiatives aimed at creating a harmonious relationship between technology and storytelling are central to the company's roadmap.

Strategic Endeavors

As part of its evolving strategy, China Literature has successfully captured a burgeoning market of new creators. In the first six months of 2026, approximately 240,000 new authors were attracted to its online ecosystem, generating over 460,000 pieces of literature. Emerging talent is driving a surge in quality content, exemplified by new releases that are resonating well with readership and traditional verticals.

The company has introduced AI technologies into critical areas, exemplified by its Buddy series for content creators, which streamlines all aspects of the creative process, reinforcing China Literature's status as a key player in advancing the intersection of originality and technology.

The company currently remains committed to developing its online literature platform, Qidian, as well as adjustments in its overall content strategy. The adaptation of popular titles into drama series has included well-received narratives like “Blossoms of Power” and “The Heir,” which have resonated with audiences and attained high rankings among streamed content.

Looking Ahead

As China Literature continues to innovate within the dynamically changing landscape of digital entertainment, it is clear that a dual focus on original content and technological integration will be vital for expanding their market presence. The ongoing shift towards AI's role in content creation not only aims to enhance narrative experiences but also strives to elevate the value associated with its extensive IP library over the next decade.

By harnessing the power of technology while nurturing creative talent, China Literature looks to redefine the future of storytelling within its platform, ensuring sustainable growth and vibrant engagement with its audience in the years to come.
