Envision Energy Launches Morocco's First Large-Scale Battery Storage System at OCP Mining Site
Envision Energy, a world leader in green technologies, has marked a significant milestone in Morocco's energy landscape by successfully commissioning the country's first large-scale lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery storage system. Located at the OCP Green Energy mining site in Benguerir, this innovative system is a testament to Morocco's commitment to renewable energy integration and industrial decarbonization.
The newly operational energy storage system boasts a capacity of 25 megawatts (MW) with 125 megawatt-hours (MWh) of storage. This installation was completed under a contract signed in late 2025 and is currently undergoing testing before entering commercial operation. The project demonstrates Envision Energy's commitment to providing comprehensive energy solutions that align well with solar power production and the specific energy needs of industrial operations.
This battery system is designed to optimize energy use by storing excess solar energy generated during the day and then redistributing it during peak consumption hours. This approach allows for an estimated reduction of about 25% in the site’s electricity costs during these peak times, showcasing the system's role not just as an energy storage solution but as an essential tool for industrial energy management.
Funded by a $20 million investment from the Clean Technology Fund managed by the African Development Bank Group, this project is designed for a lifespan of 25 years, featuring daily charge and discharge cycles. For OCP, the emphasis is not solely on the battery's capacity but rather on the system's ability to reduce peak hour costs over its operational lifespan, ultimately supporting a sustainable energy strategy.
John Lee, General Manager of Envision Energy for the Middle East and Africa, expressed pride in the successful commissioning of Morocco's first large-scale battery storage project. He emphasized that this initiative illustrates the reliability, flexibility, and cost-effectiveness of combining renewable energy sources with storage solutions in industrial applications. He stated, "Envision is proud to contribute to Morocco's energy transition with our green technologies and solutions."
Omar Kadir, CEO of OCP Green Energy, highlighted that energy storage is a natural extension of their energy strategy, addressing the variability of renewable energy generation while meeting continuous energy needs at their industrial sites. This technology facilitates a smoother integration of renewables into the national electrical grid, enhancing the flexibility and resilience of the energy supply. He added that this initiative is pivotal in accelerating the deployment of renewable energy capabilities throughout Morocco.
As Morocco strives towards its ambitious goal of having 52% of its installed electricity capacity sourced from renewable energies by 2030, this battery storage project serves as a vital benchmark for industrial decarbonization and renewable energy integration across Africa. It sets a precedent that could inspire similar projects on the continent, positioning Morocco as a leader in the transition to sustainable energy solutions.
With this landmark development, Envision Energy not only underscores its role in advancing green technology but also reaffirms Morocco's commitment to renewable energy, paving the way for a sustainable and cost-effective energy future.
