New Certificate Program Launched for Workplace Injury Prevention with Indiana State University

New Initiative for Injury Prevention in Workplaces

In a collaborative effort, ATI Worksite Solutions, a division of ATI Physical Therapy, has teamed up with the Institute for Musculoskeletal Advancement (iMSKA) and Indiana State University to unveil a pioneering Workplace Injury Prevention Certificate Program. This program, which is set to launch during the current academic year, is designed to enhance the skills of future health professionals in addressing musculoskeletal (MSK) disorders prevalent in various work environments.

The program is introduced as part of Indiana State University's Master of Athletic Training Program, emphasizing proactive strategies to address and prevent musculoskeletal issues before they lead to serious injuries. According to statistics, MSK disorders are among the leading causes of workplace absences and long-term disabilities, presenting a significant dilemma for employers and healthcare professionals alike.

Bridging the Gap Between Academia and Industry

This initiative seeks to amalgamate academic training with real-world employer requirements, effectively equipping students to tackle workplace risks and improve the overall health of the workforce. Fran Kosinski, Senior Vice President of Health Services at ATI, highlighted that, "By educating future clinicians in preventative care, we're investing in a healthier, more sustainable workforce."

The certificate’s curriculum is meticulously designed to revolve around identifying and addressing key risk factors associated with MSK disorders. Participants will gain knowledge on various aspects, including:
  • - Biomechanical risk factors: Understanding how physical forces can impact the musculoskeletal system.
  • - Ergonomic principles: Learning how to design workplaces that minimize strain on workers’ bodies.
  • - Behavioral factors: Recognizing how employee behaviors can lead to increased injury risks.

Students will also master techniques for engaging workplace stakeholders and implementing safety practices that address industry standards while nurturing a culture centered on safety.

Meeting a Growing Demand

PhD Tim Demchak, the Program Director for Indiana State’s MSAT program, remarked, "This certificate not only supports our students' career growth but also addresses a growing national need for injury-prevention professionals who can make an immediate impact across industries." Graduating students will find themselves uniquely positioned to pursue careers in areas such as workplace wellness, occupational health, and injury prevention. This proactive educational approach is hailed as timely and essential, given the rising awareness of workplace health safety.

A Commitment to the Health of Our Workforce

With plans to expand the program in collaboration with additional universities nationwide, iMSKA believes in advancing research and implementing practices that enhance workplace health. It is crucial that future health professionals are adept in these strategies to promote a more resilient workforce.
