Shanghai Electric Achieves World Record in Biometanol Bunkering Operations
On August 17, 2026, Shanghai Electric Company (SEHK: 02727, SSE: 601727) announced a remarkable milestone in its quest for sustainable energy solutions by partnering with Shanghai International Port Group and CMA CGM Group. Together, they executed a biometanol bunkering operation that involved a staggering 8,000 metric tons of biometanol. This operation has been recognized as the largest single biometanol bunkering recorded to date, marking an important advancement in the field of sustainable maritime fuel.
The inaugural ceremony for this significant operation was held at the Yangshan Port, themed "Eco-Powered Planet: A Step Towards the Future," highlighting the collaborative effort dedicated to fostering a greener future. The biometanol supplied for this project came from Shanghai Electric's green methanol initiative in Taonan, indicating a strong level of production stability and supply capability.
Shanghai Electric's success can be attributed to an interprovincial supply chain of eco-friendly fuels that plays a crucial role in supporting such large-scale operations. This strategic initiative was bolstered by the launch of a transport corridor for green fuels, which was officially inaugurated during the International Conference on Sustainable Development of Eco-friendly Fuels held in Shanghai on June 30 of this year. This corridor facilitates the transportation of methanol from the northern regions of Jilin, where it is produced, transported and stored at the Dalian Port, and ultimately bunkered in Shanghai.
The Taonan green methanol project relies heavily on the abundant wind and solar resources of Jilin Province, alongside biomass as a key raw material. The facility employs independently developed process systems and equipment, establishing itself as the world’s first large-scale plant to manufacture biometanol by integrating green electricity with biomass. It complies with the bunkering requirements at the Shanghai International Shipping Center and plays a vital role in the growth of three major hubs for green fuels in international shipping.
As an innovator in the industry, Shanghai Electric is committed to expanding its entire industrial chain focusing on the production, storage, transportation, and application of diversified eco-friendly fuels. The company is intensifying research into critical technologies, continuously modernizing its integrated solutions for green fuels. Collaborating with partners, Shanghai Electric aims to accelerate the development of integrated projects production of green methanol and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), propelling industry advancements through technology-driven innovations.
Furthermore, Shanghai Electric strives to enhance its enormous supply capacity of green fuels for both aviation and maritime sectors. The company is dedicated to contributing to China’s dual carbon goals while promoting the global transition to clean, low-carbon energy sources. With continued investments and a focus on sustainability, Shanghai Electric is paving the way for a future where eco-friendly fuels are at the forefront of the maritime and aviation industries, demonstrating its leadership in environmental responsibility and innovation.
In summary, Shanghai Electric's successful execution of this record-setting biometanol bunkering operation is not only a significant step for the company but also a landmark achievement in the movement towards sustainable energy solutions globally. Such operations illustrate the potential of green technologies to transform existing energy frameworks, enabling industries to meet growing environmental standards while supporting economic development.
