Inspiring Young Entrepreneurs at SAMURAI Summer Camp 2026

The SAMURAI Foundation, based in Minato, Tokyo, recently hosted its very first summer camp aimed at fostering entrepreneurship among elementary school students. Over three days from July 24 to July 26, 2026, thirty-six fifth and sixth graders gathered to immerse themselves in hands-on activities that taught them to identify problems, develop solutions, and effectively communicate their ideas. This initiative, named the "SAMURAI Summer Camp 2026," aims to instill a can-do attitude in children, encouraging them to pursue their aspirations with confidence.

Camp Overview

The camp took place at two main venues: the Tokyo Venture Capital Hub at Azabudai Hills on the first day, and the Toranomon Hills Forum for the remaining two days. The program was designed to be intensive, focusing on hands-on learning rather than traditional lectures, aligning with the Foundation's mission to show children that change is possible through action rather than mere ability.

Day 1: Challenge

The first day was focused on teamwork and practical challenges instead of theoretical knowledge. Participants engaged in exercises like the "Marshmallow Challenge," where they had to construct the tallest tower possible using limited materials. This experience emphasized trial and error as they navigated the challenges of teamwork and creativity. Participants concluded the day by writing letters to friends or relatives, dropping them in the mail, and awaiting responses — a simple yet profound task that highlighted the importance of communication and connections.

Day 2: Discover

The second day offered children a chance to explore essential entrepreneurial skills through various activities.

- Observing and Understanding: Teams received cards depicting residents of a fictional town and had to identify what problems each character faced. This exercise was followed by a scavenger hunt in the Toranomon area, where teams gathered clues hidden throughout the city to unlock a treasure box containing more detailed character profiles. Participants were encouraged to reflect on their initial insights and adjust their understanding.
- Problem Solving: Subsequent discussions prompted teams to brainstorm solutions, encouraging them not to settle on the first idea but to explore alternatives through creative questioning techniques.
- Sustaining Efforts: A fun, game-like activity allowed students to simulate the journey of a YouTuber, where they learned about managing income and expenses while discussing the importance of ongoing support rather than one-off solutions. By the end of the day, each team had developed a single idea they believed in, even determining pricing for their solutions.

Day 3: Create

The final day was dedicated to presentation skills. Students organized their ideas and rehearsed as a team before presenting to a group of parents who attended the camp. To culminate the event, each participant stood up and delivered a personal "Declaration to Change the World," articulating their future commitments and ambitions in life. This moment became a celebration of their growth, where they acknowledged that taking action is more critical than the fear of failure.

Leadership Reflections

Kentarou Sakakibara, the representative director of the SAMURAI Foundation, reflected on the experience by emphasizing that the challenges faced over the three days were not solely for the students. The supportive staff, comprised of facilitators and health professionals, committed fully to the experience. He recognized the efforts of all participants and noted that the scope of impact doesn't have to be vast; even small changes, starting from oneself and branching out to family and community, are significant. This camp in summer provided children with an invaluable first step toward making a meaningful difference.

Future Developments

The Foundation continues its mission by offering the "SAMURAI Entrepreneur Club" for free in various schools nationwide. This program is currently being implemented in locations such as AICJ International School and the Ogaki City Koubum Elementary School. The Foundation aims to expand to more regions, with plans to conduct additional camps based on the success of this inaugural summer experience.
