On January 21, 2025, DuPont (NYSE: DD) proudly announced that its MOLYKOTE HP-300 Grease has met the strict hydrogen purity standards outlined in ISO 146872019. This achievement comes after a collaborative development effort with HyCentA Research GmbH, which included creating a rigorous lubricant testing protocol aligned with these demanding standards.

The testing process involved exposing the MOLYKOTE HP-300 to hydrogen under high pressure conditions of 700 bar for several weeks. After this duration, a comprehensive analysis of hydrogen gas and particle contamination was conducted. The results revealed that the MOLYKOTE HP-300 did not significantly contaminate hydrogen, thereby ensuring its compatibility with essential hydrogen applications, such as fuel cell stacks.

The significance of this breakthrough is profound, especially in the context of hydrogen technologies. Pure hydrogen, while a promising energy source, can easily be tainted by contact with various materials, including lubricants. Such contamination could pose serious risks, as even minuscule impurities, at concentrations as low as 4 parts per billion, can compromise the integrity and performance of fuel cells.
