Broadmind's Career Dialogue with Chiba University Students Explores the Essence of Work

On June 9, 2026, Broadmind Corporation, a leading financial services firm located in Shibuya, Tokyo, hosted a special session at Chiba University for second-year students of its Faculty of Policy Studies. This session featured a discussion led by a recruitment officer from the company, aimed to enhance students’ understanding of career opportunities and the workplace environment. As part of the course developed by Professor Yoshiba and the NPO Branding Port, students are encouraged to explore their own brands—their strengths and values—while expanding their career options through conversations with professionals.

This was the seventh session in a series of thirteen, focused on providing a realistic perspective about working life. During the company introduction, Broadmind highlighted the significance of its financial consulting service, ‘Manpro’, and discussed the nature of the financial planner (FP) profession, including the specifics of new graduate recruitment. As part of this interactive dialogue, students expressed common uncertainties about job hunting, such as how to effectively choose a company and what to do if they are unsure about their career passions.

In response to a question about finding one’s passion, Noruma, a recruitment officer, emphasized that job searching should not solely rely on the notion of “finding what you want to do.” Instead, he suggested focusing on personal strengths and existing talents that might be overlooked yet valued by others. He encouraged students to engage in self-reflection, marking a crucial moment for their understanding of their own capabilities.

Moreover, when a student queried how to determine suitability for sales or financial industry roles, Noruma explained, “It’s often difficult to know what you’re suited for before trying it out. However, assessing your comfort in discussing with others can serve as a key indicator.” Drawing on his extensive experience as an FP, where he has provided consulting to over 100 households annually, he pointed out that “listening to clients is far more critical than simply talking, which helped bridge the gap for students who may have felt aloof about the sales and financial professions.”

Profile of the Speaker

Noruma Shinji works in the Human Resources Department as a recruitment officer at Broadmind. He joined Broadmind as a new graduate in 2016 and has since served over 100 households as an FP, winning multiple awards for his performance. Since 2018, he has shifted to the HR department, where he is responsible for guiding recruitment strategies for new graduates, mid-career, and part-time employees.

In his reflections on the event, Noruma remarked, “The financial field and the role of FPs can seem obscure for students. Having an opportunity to share authentic insights before their job search intensifies is invaluable. Engaging in these discussions leads to numerous revelations for both the students and myself. My hope is that through these dialogues, more students can have a clearer understanding of financial careers and derive valuable insights for their own pathways.”

Broadmind's Recruitment Principles

Broadmind employs a unique hiring philosophy that emphasizes qualities such as dedication to understanding people’s lives and a commitment to long-term growth over mere financial knowledge. Interestingly, many of the recent hires had interests that span diverse fields like education, human resources, real estate, and consulting, indicating a broad appeal beyond just finance. The company boasts a retention rate of approximately 12% for new hires within the first three years, which stands out positively against industry benchmarks.

By offering detailed insights into the realities of work life and corporate culture from an early stage in the job search process, Broadmind aims to minimize mismatches in hiring.
