Stoffel Vandoorne Triumphs in Tokyo E-Prix Amid Rainy Conditions
In a thrilling display of strategic racing and exceptional skill, Stoffel Vandoorne from Maserati MSG Racing clinched victory at the Tokyo E-Prix on May 17, 2025. This marked the team's success for the second consecutive year at this event and Vandoorne's first victory since the Monaco race in 2022.
The race, held under challenging rainy conditions, saw Vandoorne effectively utilize his
PIT BOOST feature after an early pit stop, establishing a lead of over 30 seconds against Nissan's Oliver Rowland. Fortunately for Vandoorne, the race's complexity escalated when last year's winner, Maximilian Günther, encountered technical difficulties requiring a vehicle recovery. Consequently, a red flag was waved, allowing Vandoorne's earlier strategic pit stop to yield maximum advantage.
The conscious strategy employed by Maserati involved depleting energy resources early on, anticipating a likely race stoppage due to the inclement weather conditions. Such foresight paid off, allowing them to capitalize when the race resumed under a standing start, wiping the previous race order clean. After securing pole position, Rowland initially showcased impressive speed, but the intricacies of Maserati's strategic game ultimately thwarted his podium aspirations.
Young racer Taylor Barnard, competing for NEOM McLaren, showcased remarkable talent by overtaking competitors assertively, especially after recovering from a significant crash during practice. His efforts earned him a place on the podium, marking his fourth consecutive top-three finish in his inaugural Formula E season. Sebastian Buemi of Envision Racing finished impressively in fourth place, followed closely by Dan Ticktum from CUPRA KIORO in fifth. Eduardo Mortara rounded out the top six, delivering essential points for Mahindra Racing.
The results have significant implications in the Driver's Championship, where Rowland now leads by the largest margin in Formula E’s history. He holds a substantial 60-point lead over Antonio Felix da Costa from TAG Heuer Porsche, ensuring a thrilling competition in the upcoming races. Nissan has also positioned itself favorably in the team standings, surpassing Porsche by five points with a score of 144 to 139, while leading the Manufacturers’ Championship with 225 points against Porsche’s 179.
Driver Insights
Stoffel Vandoorne (No. 2, Maserati MSG Racing)
“Our strategy worked perfectly and I’m over the moon! We took a bold approach early in the race by accessing a lot of energy quickly to open our pit window, which turned out to be crucial. The red flag played into our hands, and after the restart, carrying the car to the finish line required careful energy management.”
Oliver Rowland (No. 23, Nissan Formula E Team)
“We did everything we could. Early pit strategies carry risks, especially when starting from the front. I felt we maximized our car’s performance during the early laps. I’m satisfied with how I performed, but tomorrow will demand a different approach since we won't have PIT BOOST.”
Taylor Barnard (No. 5, NEOM McLaren Formula E Team)
“This was my first time racing in the rain and I’m ecstatic to have made it to the podium! I didn’t expect such a performance, especially after the challenges I faced during practice.”
In addition to riveting racing, the event embraced social responsibility initiatives, showcasing sustainable practices. The Tokyo E-Prix employed renewable energy sources mainly comprising sustainable HVO fuel. Attendees had a chance to engage with community programs like the ‘Inspiration Hour’, where over 2,000 locals gained insight into sustainable motorsports.
