Celebrating Youth Art: Clear Channel's Nationwide Billboard Campaign for Afterschool Programs

Illuminating the Future: Youth Art Shines on Billboards Across America

This October, a unique collaboration between the Afterschool Alliance and Clear Channel Outdoor is bringing the creative expressions of young artists to the forefront. The event, part of the nationwide Lights On Afterschool initiative, showcases artwork from a talented 15-year-old student, Evelyn Daniel, whose design will be displayed on nearly 2,000 digital billboards throughout the country.

A Platform for Young Artists

With a mission to celebrate afterschool programs, this campaign highlights the 'Powered by Afterschool' design created by Evelyn, a student at Cass Technical High School in Detroit. The initiative not only displays her artwork but also underscores the value of afterschool programs in providing young people with opportunities to develop skills, engage creatively, and connect with peers and mentors. These programs serve as safe havens, enabling children to explore their interests, cultivate talents, and build confidence.

Evelyn's work is a product of her involvement with Usher's New Look, a program that empowers youth through education and exposure to real-world experiences. During her time at the Michigan Central Boys & Girls Club Spark Lab, she received guidance from communications and design professionals, giving her the chance to learn valuable skills while producing impactful artwork.

The Importance of Afterschool Programs

The Lights On Afterschool event, now in its 27th year, will see approximately 8,000 events held on or around October 22. These gatherings aim to spotlight the essential role afterschool programs play in supporting both students and families. Despite the evident demand—29.6 million children in the U.S. needing afterschool resources, with only 7 million currently enrolled—these programs are vital for guiding children towards successful futures through engaging, hands-on learning opportunities that foster lifelong skills.

Afterschool programs significantly improve educational outcomes; students involved in such initiatives tend to outperform their peers academically, gain vital social skills, and enjoy greater educational achievements. The collaborative effort of various organizations, including schools, community centers, and local governments, extends the reach and impact of this celebration.

Evan's Artistic Journey

Reflecting on her journey, Evelyn mentioned, "My favorite thing about my afterschool program is being able to help people with a skill I acquired and learned to love from a young age." Her experience showcases the power of mentorship and the practical learning that can occur in supportive environments. As she navigated the project, she learned about project management and the importance of adhering to calculated plans—all while expressing her artistic talents.

Community Involvement and Support

The campaign is further strengthened by the Honorary Chair, music artist Usher, whose advocacy has spurred greater awareness and action surrounding the needs of youth programs. Community leaders, including mayors and governors, will proclaim October 22 as Lights On Afterschool Day, engaging local groups in festivities like lighting up buildings and parks to illuminate their commitment to youth development.

Clear Channel Outdoor is making significant contributions by donating prominent billboard spaces across 25 markets, reaching out to communities nationwide with essential messages about the value of afterschool initiatives. The highlight will be Evelyn’s art featured on two jumbo billboards in Times Square and illuminated displays in Boston's South Station on the campaign's peak day.

Final Thoughts

As Jodi Grant, the Executive Director of the Afterschool Alliance, stated, “Evelyn's work demonstrates firsthand the kind of real-world learning, career exploration, mentorship, and growth that afterschool programs offer young people.” This major campaign emphasizes the societal need for continued investment in afterschool programs, not just for their educational benefit but also for the positive influences they provide in youth lives.

Through initiatives like this, we can celebrate not only the artistic talents of young individuals but also the important organizations that drive these impactful programs. For more insights into the incredible role afterschool programs play, visit ThisIsAfterschool.org.
