Natura Resources Joins Forces with Texas A&M for $5.38 Million Nuclear Fuel Project

Partners in Innovation: Natura Resources and Texas A&M

Natura Resources has announced an exciting partnership with the Texas A&M Engineering Experiment Station (TEES) to advance the future of nuclear fuel through innovative research. This collaboration has been recognized with a significant investment of $5.38 million from the U.S. Department of Energy's Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E). The objective? To explore the transformative potential of recycling materials from spent nuclear fuel into new fuel for next-generation molten salt reactors.

The project, aptly titled “Turning Nuclear Waste into Fuel with a Thorium Molten Salt Reactor,” is set to address a pressing challenge within the nuclear industry: the safe management and reduction of the existing nuclear waste stockpile. By innovatively utilizing spent nuclear fuel, the initiative aligns with ARPA-E's High-performance Optimized Recycled Nuclear Isotopes for Gen IV reactors (HORNIG) program, which intends to bolster America’s capabilities in producing advanced and sustainable nuclear fuel.

A Journey of Collaboration

Jordan Robison, CEO of Natura Resources, emphasized the significance of this partnership, stating, "Texas A&M has been integral to our journey since our inception. This collaboration has created a robust foundation for future advancements in nuclear technology." He accentuated the importance of the federal investment as a catalyst for translating advanced research into practical applications, highlighting Texas A&M’s role as a potential site for Natura's MSR-100 molten salt reactor.

The collaboration with Texas A&M isn't merely academic; it's a fusion of research excellence and industry innovation. Lin Shao, a Regents Professor of nuclear engineering at Texas A&M, pointed out that Natura Resources will undertake a significant role as a technology commercialization partner. This position involves not only contributing to research and development but also ensuring compliance with industry standards through rigorous data collection, validation, and documentation.

Stronger Energy Solutions Ahead

U.S. Deputy Secretary of Energy James P. Danly expressed his confidence in such partnerships, asserting that America’s energy future hinges on bold innovations. This initiative exemplifies a proactive approach toward solving long-standing nuclear waste challenges while developing technologies that enhance national energy security. Moreover, ARPA-E Director Conner Prochaska praised the investment as a step toward achieving a robust nuclear renaissance, aimed at reinforcing energy independence and economic security in the U.S.

Over the next three years, a dedicated team from TEES, Savannah River National Laboratory, and Natura Resources will investigate the recycling of materials found in spent nuclear fuel for use in advanced molten salt reactors. Natura’s segment of the venture is estimated to be valued at $1 million. This research addresses critical inquiries surrounding how long-lived transuranic materials could be utilized in thorium-based molten salt fuel.

By approaching nuclear waste material not just as a disposal challenge but as a resource, the research aims to develop a foundational understanding necessary for this liquid fuel's incorporation into future reactors. The initial research phase will commence at Texas A&M, where cerium will serve as a non-radioactive surrogate for plutonium to facilitate the study of the fuel's behavior.

Subsequent stages of the research are planned to occur at Savannah River National Laboratory, where techniques validated at A&M will be tested using actual plutonium-containing salts. Through these efforts, Natura will act not only as an industrial partner but will also help seamlessly transition laboratory findings into real-world reactor designs.

Natura Resources is already recognized as a leader in the advanced nuclear sector. With its commitment to develop liquid-fueled, molten salt-cooled reactors, it is poised to meet the rising demands for reliable energy solutions. The company has secured over $120 million in funding and is dedicated to shaping America’s energy future effectively. As technologies evolve, this partnership is a promising step toward achieving sustainable nuclear energy solutions.
