Nel ASA Secures $7 Million Order to Supply PEM Equipment in the U.S.

Nel Hydrogen US, a subsidiary of the well-established company Nel ASA, has recently announced an exciting new venture with a notable purchase order valued at approximately $7 million. This order is specifically for the delivery of PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane) electrolyser equipment that will play a vital role in hydrogen production at a public utility facility in the United States.

The recipient of this order is the Douglas County Public Utility District (DCPUD), located in East Wenatchee, Washington. This public utility firm has been actively involved in the legislative process, helping to create new laws that permit public utilities to produce and market renewable hydrogen. This partnership stands to benefit both parties significantly, as it not only enables the advancement of renewable energy technology but also positions DCPUD as a pioneer in leveraging hydrogen as an energy source.

One of the key advantages of the PEM electrolyser is its operational flexibility. In scenarios where the hydropower production from DCPUD needs to be adjusted, the electrolyser can utilize the surplus energy instead of urging hydroelectric generators to frequently ramp their output up or down. This capability reduces the wear and tear on both the turbines and the associated machinery, thus prolonging the equipment's lifespan and lowering maintenance costs.

According to Todd Cartwright, Chief Commercial Officer of Nel, "We are thrilled to collaborate with an innovative partner like DCPUD. This project represents our first green hydrogen plant operated by a public utility, and our PEM electrolysers will facilitate balancing the load with demand, while simultaneously producing a valuable fuel."

DCPUD's general manager, Gary Ivory, echoed this enthusiasm, stating, "Our partnership with Nel Hydrogen will empower us to harness renewable hydrogen for our community, enhance the performance of our Wells Hydroelectric Project, and boost the adoption of hydrogen in our local area."

The order specifically involves containerized PEM equipment production, with the production of the electrolyser stacks taking place at Nel’s manufacturing facility in Wallingford, Connecticut. Production is set to start soon, with the goal of the equipment becoming operational in the first half of 2027, thereby contributing to a rapid transition to renewable energy in the region.

This significant contract solidifies Nel ASA’s role as a leader in hydrogen technology, given its long-standing expertise dating back to 1927.
