Music Drives Us: Celebrating 20 Years of Impact
Founded in 2006 by the visionary Ernie Boch Jr., Music Drives Us (MDU) stands as a beacon of hope and creativity in the community, reaching into the lives of children across New England. Marking its 20th anniversary in 2026, the organization recognizes two decades dedicated to transforming the landscape of music education.
From its inception, MDU's mission has been clear: to provide children, irrespective of their financial backgrounds, access to music education and instruments. By donating over
10,000 new instruments and awarding grants to more than
400 schools and organizations, Music Drives Us has channeled millions in funding to support educators and schools in need. This commitment directly benefits students who might not otherwise have the opportunity to explore their musical talents.
A Year of Celebration and Reflection
In light of this significant milestone, MDU has planned an exciting calendar of events for 2026. The celebration aims to engage the community through various initiatives, including student concerts, grant awards, and special performances from renowned artists. One of the flagship events, the
Ultimate Shredder Contest, is scheduled for
February 26, 2026, at The Lansdowne Pub in Boston—a contest that promises to showcase emerging talents and fire up the local music scene.
Throughout the year, further activities—including a summer concert—will enrich the milestones of MDU, continuing to cultivate creativity, discipline, and teamwork among participating students and the broader community.
Impact Over Two Decades
Since its establishment, Music Drives Us has provided a lifeline to numerous children and music programs that lacked adequate funding. Amid emergencies, including flood situations that ruined instruments, MDU stepped up, ensuring access to musical education remained consistent and reliable.
The skills children gain through music education extend far beyond the realm of notes and rhythms; they develop confidence, enhanced focus, and a sense of belonging—all attributes that are vital as they grow into adulthood. Ernie Boch Jr. reflects, "Music has the power to change lives! We started with the mission of providing access to music and the profound opportunities it brings. The joy of knowing that we have enriched lives over these twenty years is incredibly rewarding."
Looking Forward: The Ongoing Legacy of Music Education
As the organization delves into its third decade, there remains an unwavering commitment to advocating for music education as an integral aspect of childhood development. The belief that music opens doors, heals, and creates connections remains at the heart of MDU's endeavors. Ernie Boch Jr. notes, "As we reflect on our achievements, we also look ahead with the same passion that inspired us two decades ago. There remains so much work to do in bringing music into the lives of children everywhere."
