Abu Dhabi to Welcome the Inaugural World Deaf Congress in the Middle East

Abu Dhabi Welcomes the World Deaf Congress

In a remarkable development for the Middle East and the global Deaf community, Abu Dhabi is poised to host the 'XX World Congress of the World Federation of the Deaf 2027'. This event marks the first time the Congress will be held in the Arab region, symbolizing a significant stride towards inclusivity and recognition of Deaf culture. The official logo was recently unveiled, designed by the talented Deaf artist Husam Mohammad Elfara from Jordan, who outshone competitors in a global design competition.

Event Details and Significance

The Congress, set for September 19-23, 2027, is expected to draw over 2,000 Deaf participants and advocates from around the world. This gathering will focus on celebrating national sign languages and fostering international collaborations among Deaf communities. The theme, "Sign Languages Always and Everywhere," emphasizes the fundamental role of sign language in bridging communities and promoting equality.

Organized by the Zayed Higher Organization for People of Determination (ZHO) in partnership with the UAE Deaf Association, this Congress promises to spotlight the UAE's growing role as a hub for sign language rights. The logo competition attracted a remarkable total of 41 submissions from 14 different countries, showcasing the creativity and engagement of the Deaf community worldwide.

The Winning Logo

The winning design, created by Husam Elfara, beautifully encapsulates the essence of both Deaf culture and Emirati heritage. Central to the logo is a stylized open hand, an emblematic representation of sign language and Deaf identity, symbolizing inclusion and communication. Surrounding this is a design inspired by traditional Emirati motifs, denoting cultural pride and unity. The logo's bilingual presentation in Arabic and English reflects the Congress's commitment to accessibility and inclusivity, resonating with the UAE’s status as the host nation.

H.E. Abdullah Abudalee Al Humaidan, General Secretary of ZHO, remarked on the significance of hosting the Congress, stating, "This event is not only an honor but also a pivotal moment for our commitment to inclusivity. It will shine a global spotlight on the UAE's vision of empowering people of determination and celebrating their invaluable contributions to society."

Voices From the Community

Mr. Musabah Saeed Al Neyadi, Chair of the Organizing Committee, expressed pride in the logo's creation by a Deaf designer from the region, emphasizing that it reflects their shared values. He stated, "This Congress is a celebration of our identity and our language, inviting the world to experience the power of sign language in fostering community bonds." Similarly, Dr. Joseph J. Murray, President of the World Federation of the Deaf, highlighted the event’s potential to elevate the importance of Deaf rights and innovation.

Historical Context

The World Congress of the World Federation of the Deaf has been held every four years since 1951 and represents the leading global platform dedicated to the rights and recognition of Deaf individuals. The 2027 Congress in Abu Dhabi aims to unite Deaf leaders, advocates, educators, and policymakers through plenary sessions, cultural exhibitions, and networking opportunities.
