Detroit Charter Company Engages Youth in Sailing Adventure for Future Opportunities

Discovering Opportunities on the Water

In an exciting initiative dubbed 'Exposure Creates Opportunity', the Detroit Charter Company recently brought together local youth for a transformative day on the Detroit River aboard a Santa Cruz 70 racing yacht. This program aimed to introduce students from diverse backgrounds to various industries through immersive experiences while fostering curiosity and personal growth.

A Partnership for Change

Partnering with the Detroit Community Sailing Center, Detroit Food Academy, Detroit Yacht Club, and Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Detroit, the event showcased how unordinary experiences can ignite ambition and open doors for the younger generation. Briana Burke, Events Coordinator for the Detroit Charter Company, emphasized, "We believe exposure changes lives. Sometimes all it takes is one new experience to help a young person discover a passion they never knew existed."

Four Unique Experiences

The day's activities were designed to reflect the individual strengths of each partner organization, offering students a multifaceted view of potential career pathways:

1. Detroit Community Sailing Center

Students honed their sailing skills aboard the 70-foot yacht while learning about teamwork, communication, and leadership. This experience reinforced the notion that collaboration is crucial when navigating the waters—both literally and metaphorically.

2. Detroit Food Academy

Through a hands-on culinary workshop, students created artisanal charcuterie boxes, gaining insights into product presentation and the vital role of guest experience in the hospitality sector. This practical session not only showcased culinary skills but also highlighted the impact of well-planned events on overall tourism.

3. Detroit Yacht Club

Students with prior sailing knowledge were given the opportunity to apply their skills in a live setting. The hands-on training focused on navigation, communication, and working together as a crew, lending students a deeper appreciation of what it means to operate a performance racing yacht.

4. Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Detroit

Engaging with media and creative storytelling, students explored photography and videography. Their involvement illustrated how multimedia plays a pivotal role in shaping narratives within events and enhancing public awareness through design and storytelling.

Beyond Just Sailing

'Exposure Creates Opportunity' was crafted with the belief that valuable experiences should align with young people's interests and aspirations. Each activity was tailored to inspire students and demonstrate that the sail was just the beginning of a voyage toward various professional fields.

The Detroit Charter Company aims to continuously broaden the scope of this initiative through additional partnerships with nonprofit organizations, corporate sponsors, and community stakeholders. They invite businesses, individuals, and groups seeking to invest in the futures of Detroit youth through mentorship opportunities, sponsorships, or direct engagement in programs to reach out and contribute.

By facilitating immersive experiences on the Detroit River, the Detroit Charter Company is dedicated to ensuring that young people gain access to opportunities they might not otherwise experience. This initiative is not only about teaching sailing; it’s about setting the course for their futures in diverse industries and career paths.
