Empowering Collaboration: Pal System's Innovative Workshops for Organizational Growth

On June 30, 2023, the Pal System Cooperative Federation, headquartered in Shinjuku, Tokyo, held a dynamic workshop utilizing its self-initiated activity system. This event brought together 37 employees across various departments, including product development, sales, welfare, accounting, and information systems, to explore projects that leverage the cooperative’s strength in collaboration.

A platform for voluntary activities

The workshop, titled "Pal Connector," was organized by a committee of enthusiastic staff within the Pal System Collective project. Its aim was to enhance recognition and utilization of the self-initiated activity system that encourages cross-departmental teams to engage in diverse activities.

Participants from offices in Higashi-Shinjuku, Inagi, and Iwatsuki included 37 staff members from 27 departments. The group comprised both young professionals with only a few years of experience and veterans with over two decades in the organization, all eager to build connections beyond their usual work interactions.

As the participants divided into five groups, they engaged in self-introductions and discussions about their departmental responsibilities, fostering deeper relationships. For instance, intersections were created between employees typically isolated in their roles, such as those involved in elderly care and environmental initiatives. This interaction sparked new insights about the significance of their cooperative's business activities and the potential for cross-departmental improvement.

Participants expressed the desire for better communication in product development, noting that insights from other departments could enhance the overall process. Self-introducing unexpected personal interests led to exciting ideas, such as hosting tasting events for new products or organizing health-promoting activities like hiking and sports days. Others suggested building connections with different cooperatives or engaging in farming support activities to maintain ties with production origins.

Idea sharing and community building

After deepening their understanding of each other’s roles, participants shared project ideas they wished to implement using Pal System’s cooperative strengths. Topics ranged from products ensuring food safety and quality to community-building initiatives bolstered by shared interests in music and film. Ideas shared included health-focused activities and initiatives promoting ties with local agricultural sources, demonstrating the cooperative’s overall commitment.

Each table then exchanged project insights, allowing everything from project explanations to group discussions, culminating in participants voting on ideas they resonated with, symbolized by stickers indicating their support.

Participants reported positive experiences, commenting on the value of interacting with colleagues regardless of age or department and expressing interest in joining the projects that garnered their attention. This initiative showcased the success of Pal Connector in creating lasting connections beyond typical workplace confines.

Ongoing projects for a brighter future

The Pal System Collective, which commenced in the 2024 fiscal year, aspires to promote autonomous activities among employees, facilitating a cooperative community that aligns with Pal System’s 2030 vision to foster local regions where people "eat, produce, and support one another."

Currently, three projects led by cross-departmental teams are underway:
1. Biotope Monitoring Team: This team seeks to deepen understanding of the significance of biological surveys in rice paddy ecosystems, part of Pal System's long-term commitment to sustainable agriculture with minimal pesticide use. Involving multiple departments, staff engage in practical experiences that enhance the cooperative’s image as an advocate for environmental conservation.
2. Cat Club: Dedicated to creating a better living environment for both stray and adopted cats, 24 members stand behind the motto "CATS ARE PEACE". Their activities include educating the community about stray and rescue cats and promoting pet products that use domestically sourced materials, ultimately aiming for a harmonious existence between humans and cats.
3. Career Connectivity Project: Encompassing 11 employees, this initiative aims to foster mutual understanding and connection among various positions dentro Pal System. With the backdrop of the 2025 International Cooperative Year, the project promotes workplace experiences that enhance cooperative strengths.

Pal System is committed to deepening connections between employees and fulfilling its role as a cooperative, continuously contributing to the welfare of local communities and consumers.
