Engaging with Agriculture in Isesaki City
On May 31, a unique agricultural experience series will kick off in Isesaki City, organized by the Gunma Direct Production Council known as "Megurunma," which includes members from Pal System Gunma. This exciting initiative allows families to engage directly with food production, from planting to harvesting, in a series of four hands-on events throughout the year.
First Event Details
The first session will take place at "Minna no Hatake" (Everyone's Garden) located in Sakaimachi, beginning at 10 a.m. Participants—around 60 families—will plant seedlings of red onions and sweet potatoes while also taking part in weeding activities and harvesting radishes. This initial event sets the stage for a yearly itinerary that includes additional activities, such as potato digging in June and red onion harvesting along with baked onion and sweet potato tasting in November.
Learning and Experiencing
Through these activities, participants will have the opportunity to understand the time and effort involved in the growth of food. This educational experience is designed to foster a deeper appreciation for agriculture, allowing families to directly connect with producers. They will not only enjoy the satisfaction of growing their own vegetables but will also experience the challenges that come with food production, thereby enhancing their understanding of the food supply chain.
Collaboration with Local Producers
The maintenance of the crops will be overseen by the Tone River Producer Group led by Katsushi Kurabayashi. This collaboration aims to give participants a continuous opportunity to nurture crops over the year, thereby cultivating a profound relationship with the source of their food.
The series is intended to promote an understanding of local production and consumption, bridging the gap between consumers and producers. As participants enjoy the process of growing their own food, they also develop a sense of gratitude towards the farmers who dedicate their efforts to bring fresh produce to the community.
Future Events
Following the first gathering, the next stages are planned:
- - Second Session: June 14 - Weeding in the garden
- - Third Session: June 21 - Potato digging and further garden maintenance
- - Fourth Session: November 8 - Harvesting red onions along with tasting baked onions and sweet potatoes.
The experience is not limited to just the red onion planting course; the program also includes a "Mame Mame Course" focused on growing edamame throughout the year.
Understanding Gunma's Agricultural Appeal
The Gunma Direct Production Council, which includes various agricultural groups across the region as well as Pal System Gunma, is dedicated to fostering collaboration between producers and consumers. Their goal is to enhance sustainable agriculture, promote healthy living, and create vibrant communities while providing educational opportunities that connect families with local farming efforts.
As part of this ongoing initiative, Pal System Gunma is committed to strengthening the community ties between producers and consumers to cultivate sustainable farming practices. This aligns with their mission to showcase the richness of Gunma's agricultural landscape and the importance of local food production.
