Affinis Ensemble Selection 2025



On March 28, 2026, music enthusiasts are in for a treat as the Affinis Culture Foundation presents the highly anticipated concert titled Affinis Ensemble Selection (AES) 2025. Taking place at the illustrious Suntory Hall, Blue Rose in Minato Ward, Tokyo, this matinee performance promises a captivating experience of chamber music with a unique combination of strings and winds.

Showcasing Exceptional Talent


The concert will feature two accomplished ensembles: the Kansai Philharmonic Wind Quintet and the Cello Quartet led by renowned cellist Kayoko Mukaiyama. Known for her artistry and dedication, Mukaiyama is a professor at the Tokyo University of the Arts and a member of the Affinis Culture Foundation’s Advisory Committee. The cellists joining her are:
  • - Hiroshi Ito (Tokyo Symphony Orchestra)
  • - Kaneya Ichi (NHK Symphony Orchestra)
  • - Ryosuke Moriyama (Tokyo Symphony Orchestra)

The wind quintet comprises talented musicians from the Kansai Philharmonic Orchestra:
  • - Natsumi Takahashi (Flute)
  • - Akiko Butsuda (Oboe)
  • - Takako Umemoto (Clarinet)
  • - Saki Toyama (Bassoon)
  • - Natsuya Nagano (Horn)

The Program


The concert will unfold in two parts:

First Half: Cello Quartet with Kayoko Mukaiyama


1. Julius Klengel – Four Pieces, Op.33
2. Alexandre Tansman – Two Movements
3. Joseph Jongen – Two Pieces, Op.89

This first section will highlight the captivating capabilities of four cellos, showcasing the rich harmonies and textures of the pieces written specifically for this unique arrangement. Each composition offers a different emotional landscape, merging tradition with contemporary techniques.

Second Half: Kansai Philharmonic Wind Quintet


1. Anton Reicha – Wind Quintet in E-flat Major, Op.88 No.2
2. Alexander von Zemlinsky – Humoreske
3. Endre Szervánszky – Wind Quintet No.1

The second half will present a diverse array of works by various Eastern European composers. From Reicha’s classical structures to the folkloric inspirations in Szervánszky’s composition, the wind quintet will take the audience on an auditory journey infused with cultural vibrancy.

How to Attend


The concert begins at 14:00 (doors open at 13:30), providing ample time for attendees to settle into the beautiful surroundings of the Suntory Hall. Tickets are priced at 3,000 yen for general admission and 1,000 yen for students under the age of 24 (student ID required at the entrance).
