Overcoming the 3-Year Startup Barrier in Ishigaki
On February 28, 2026, GOB Inc., based in Shibuya, Tokyo, partnered with Ishigaki City to host a vibrant event known as the 'Garage Sale.' This event marked the culmination of the entrepreneur program 'Ishigaki Entrepreneurship Garage,' which began in August 2025. It was designed as an open demo day for citizens, highlighting various new products and services developed by local entrepreneurs. The event attracted around 600 attendees, creating a lively atmosphere of community engagement and support for innovation.
Welcoming Atmosphere with a Special Touch
The event kicked off with a lively introduction from a popular comedic duo, Garage Sale, whose name inspired the event's title. Their engaging dialogue drew many eager attendees from the start. As people gathered, they were treated to the unveiling of the 'Ishigaki Entrepreneurship Start Book.' This publication summarizes the valuable insights and experiences of over 60 local entrepreneurs who participated in the program, focusing on the importance of building relationships within the community for greater business success.
GOB is dedicated to helping local entrepreneurs by providing guidance and support structures to navigate challenges like the common 'three-year barrier' many startups face. The Start Book specifically documents how successful entrepreneurs leveraged local support institutions, ensured that newcomers had access to the resources they needed, and offered practical advice on overcoming obstacles.
Showcase of Local Innovations
One of the event's main attractions was a marketplace featuring entrepreneurial creations born from the 'Ishigaki Entrepreneurship Garage.' Local entrepreneurs enthusiastically showcased their offerings, delighting visitors with a variety of new food products and services. Among them, Yasushi Hirata's 'Pineapple Beef Burger' garnered significant attention, attracting long lines. Hirata's innovative farming practice emphasizes nurturing cattle with pineapple to create a unique product that champions sustainable agriculture.
Participants engaged directly with these offerings, purchasing, tasting, and supporting local initiatives, thus embodying the essence of the community-driven entrepreneurial ecosystem envisioned for Ishigaki.
Passionate Presentations
The developer presentations were another highlight of the day. Entrepreneurs from the program delivered dynamic pitches about their business ideas, which encompassed diverse domains such as food branding, education, and international cultural exchange through entertainment. Attendees listened intently, inspired by the passion that each entrepreneur exuded about their projects.
Interspersed between the presentations, the local comedy duo 'Baba Space' lightened the mood with relatable sketches, easing the tension for presenters and fostering a friendly atmosphere. Audience members responded positively, offering encouragement and building a supportive environment essential for budding entrepreneurs.
The day culminated in an awards ceremony recognizing outstanding participants. Unique awards were presented to various entrepreneurs demonstrating creativity, impact, and social engagement, such as the Island Challenge Award won by Koosuke Arita for his initiative to establish an international film festival in an island community without cinemas.
Looking Forward
Reflecting on the success of the Garage Sale, GOB Director Kenjiya Miyara emphasized the organization's mission to foster a supportive environment for startups in Ishigaki. Understanding the challenges faced in smaller communities, GOB intends to enhance local collaborations, providing a platform for constructive dialogue and engagement among entrepreneurs, local business owners, and residents.
As these workshops and support programs evolve, GOB continues to focus on its unique approach to cultivating entrepreneurial spirit in Ishigaki, aiming to establish a sustainable ecosystem that nurtures local businesses and drives innovation.
With a commitment to the entrepreneurial community, GOB, founded in August 2014, aims to invest in the creativity and worldview of entrepreneurs, helping them transcend conventional economic constraints.
