International Cooperation in Baoting: Advancing Green Innovation and Health for Sustainable Futures
In the picturesque Baoting County of China, significant strides towards sustainable development were made during the Implementation and Action: Climate and Health International Conference, conducted between December 15 and 16, 2024. This event was co-organized by the Ningyuan Institute of Climate and Sustainable Development and the Baoting County Government, marking the inception of the China-EU (Baoting) Green and Digital Innovation Zone. This initiative is a timely response to the urgent climate and health issues confronting the globe today, emphasizing the need for global partnerships and comprehensive innovation.

A keynote address by China's inaugural Special Envoy on Climate Change, Mr. Xie Zhenhua, underscored the importance of innovative solutions for China’s green transition. He called for enhanced international cooperation targeting sustainable development models, green energy transitions, mutual carbon standard recognition, and pioneering sustainable finance mechanisms.
Highlighting the initiative's alignment with China's 14th Five-Year Plan, UNDP Administrator Achim Steiner remarked, "This initiative not only structures an effective response to ecological challenges but also serves as a blueprint for sustainable advancement in small island developing states and beyond." Similarly, Ms. Beate Trankmann, UNDP Resident Representative in China, detailed the extensive impact of climate change on global economies, urging for innovative action during her opening remarks.
A key aspect of the conference was the signing of a Statement of Intent (SOI) among UNDP, Baoting County, CICETE, and Shenzhen Honghai Clean Technology Research Institute. This partnership aims to propel sustainable development within the Green and Digital Innovation Zone while examining climate resilience strategies in island and coastal regions. It also seeks to establish frameworks to channel more financial resources towards low-carbon transformations, advancing China's ambitious carbon neutrality targets.
Attendees were also introduced to various collaborative projects between China and the EU, including health cooperation initiatives, mutual recognition of carbon standards, and the establishment of a Green Digital Carbon Management Platform. These projects symbolize a concerted effort to tackle global climate challenges while fortifying health infrastructure.
