Tongji Day and the 2025 Symposium: Shaping Sino-European Green Cooperation

On June 13, 2025, the Tongji Day and the Tongji-German Symposium were successfully held in Berlin, marking a significant milestone in the development of sustainable cooperation between China and Germany. Organized by Tongji University and the Sino-German SEM Center at Tongji, the forum's theme was "New Pathways for Sustainable Transformation: Chinese-German Cooperation for a Greener Future."

At this event, Professor Fang Shou'en, President of the University Council, emphasized Tongji's pivotal role over the past century as a bridge between China and Germany. He discussed the university's strategy aimed at promoting digitalization, green innovation, and interdisciplinary collaboration to combat global challenges.

The symposium featured presentations from the Academy of International Studies at Tongji University, the International Student Recruitment Base, and the Base for Foreign Talent Recruitment. Furthermore, the first Tongji Germany Summer Camp was announced, which will host hundreds of students for intercultural learning experiences.

In alignment with the event's theme, "New Pathways for Sustainable Transformation: Sino-German Collaboration as a Driving Force," eminent scholars and industry leaders from China and Germany convened to explore innovative collaborative frontiers. Their discussions aimed at promoting global sustainable development through Sino-European alliances.

Keynote speakers included Dr. Gero Decker from SAP and Professor Xie Jingui from the Technical University of Munich. They underscored the necessity for Sino-German cooperation to evolve from resource complementarity to technological co-innovation, particularly in the fields of artificial intelligence and renewable energies.

Clas Neumann, SAP's Senior Vice President and Director of the Global SAP Labs Network; Andre Meyer, Head of Business Development and External Affairs for EMEA; and Zhang Hui, Vice President of NIO Group shared their insights on Sino-German collaboration in innovation.

The symposium concluded with the launch of the International Joint Innovation Center for Sustainable Energy Management, a partnership between Tongji University and XJ Group. This center is poised to facilitate the energy transition and the development of green technologies.

Professor Shi Qian, President of the Tongji SEM Council and Dean of the Sino-German Academy at Tongji, indicated that the center would serve as a new hub for technological collaboration, intertwining talent development, research and development, and technology transfer to expedite the global shift towards green energy.

Attendees included representatives from academia and politics in Berlin, notably from the Berlin Senate and the Berlin Asia Forum. Academics from prominent institutions such as the Technical University of Berlin, Humboldt University, Mannheim University, the Berlin School of Economics and Law (ESCP), and Karlsruhe Institute of Technology were also present, highlighting the event's broad impact on both the academic and civic communities.

This notable event not only showcased the commitment of Tongji University to sustainable development but also reinforced the significance of international collaboration between China and Germany in addressing shared environmental challenges. As the world faces unprecedented climate change threats, initiatives like the Tongji Day and the Tongji-German Symposium are essential in forging pathways for a sustainable future through collective effort, platform building, and innovative thinking.
