Global Communities Unite to Raise Climate Change Awareness on June 21

Show Your Stripes Day - A Global Initiative

On June 21, meteorologists, journalists, scientists, content creators, and communities around the world will unite for Show Your Stripes Day. This initiative aims to raise awareness regarding the pressing issue of human-induced climate change using a powerful visual tool known as the Warming Stripes.

The Warming Stripes serve as a virtual timeline that highlights temperature changes from pre-industrial times to the present day. Essentially, these stripes depict a compelling visual of our planet's temperature changes, with each stripe representing a year: blue tones indicate cooler-than-average years, while red represents warmer ones. This insightful graphic, created by climate scientist Ed Hawkins, condenses over a century of temperature data into a simple yet effective illustration of our warming world.

The significance of these visuals goes beyond just showcasing global temperature trends; they invite people to localize their understanding. Individuals can explore how average temperatures have changed in their respective cities, states, or countries, fostering personal engagement and discussion about climate change that is rooted in their own experiences.

This year's Show Your Stripes Day is spearheaded by Climate Central, with the backing of the VoLo Foundation—a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting science-based climate solutions.

Why This Initiative Matters

Thais Lopez Vogel, Co-Founder of the VoLo Foundation, emphasizes the importance of factual data in motivating action against climate change. “Global warming isn’t just a theory; it's a reality. Data helps us transition from argument to action. Here’s how temperatures are changing where you live,” she states. Understanding the rise in climate-related harms affecting loved ones and local environments is crucial for driving collective action.

Bernadette Woods Placky, VP of Engagement and Chief Meteorologist at Climate Central, adds, “The more individuals recognize the growing threats of climate change to their surroundings, the more proactive they'll become.”

How to Participate in #ShowYourStripes

1. Download Your Stripes: Access the global image at showyourstripes.info, or go to Climate Central’s interactive platform to create a customized graphic for your locality.
2. Show Off Your Stripes: Share the image on social media platforms, use it as your profile picture, or in group chats, and drop it in workplace messaging tools like Slack or Teams.
3. Tag and Amplify: Utilize the hashtag #ShowYourStripes and include @ClimateCentral in your posts to help spread this critical message.
4. Tell Your Story: Sharing personal anecdotes can transform data into action—tell others why you're participating!

These graphics, rooted in rigorous scientific data, also underscore the relationship between the rise in global temperatures and extreme weather phenomena such as heatwaves, hurricanes, droughts, and wildfires.

By joining the #ShowYourStripes movement, individuals and organizations play a vital role in making climate change tangible, personal, and urgent—one conversation at a time. With our collective participation, we can create awareness that drives real change toward a healthier planet.
