Set Hach: A Hero of Agrifood Systems Recognized by FAO in Cambodia
Set Hach: An Inspiring Agrifood Systems Hero
In a remarkable ceremony on October 15, 2026, Set Hach was celebrated by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) as one of the "100 Women Heroes in Agrifood Systems for Rural Development" at their headquarters in Rome, Italy. This recognition, part of the International Year of the Woman Farmer, highlights her exceptional leadership and contributions that are redefining agrifood systems and positively influencing rural communities in Cambodia.
Set Hach is the chair of the Strey Phokphal Meanchey Agricultural Cooperative situated in Siem Reap Province. She has undergone a profound transformation from a rural homemaker to a renowned leader within her community. Since joining a self-help group supported by Heifer International Cambodia in 2013, Hach has actively participated in various activities aimed at financial literacy and community development. Her journey exemplifies how determination and access to education can empower individuals, especially women, to enact meaningful change.
During her initial days with the self-help group, Set Hach began saving and participating in workshops on leadership. Her commitment to learning and growth was evident as she quickly rose to take on leadership roles within her group. By becoming the deputy chair of her cooperative, Hach demonstrated her potential and capabilities, ultimately taking over as chairperson in 2017.
Under her guidance, the cooperative has experienced exponential growth. Originally founded in 2016 with just 82 members, predominantly women, the cooperative has expanded to include 540 members across 30 villages by 2025. This includes a remarkable increase in female membership, showcasing Hach's dedication to empowering women in agriculture. The cooperative now boasts a capital growth from approximately $2,275 to over $130,000, reflecting the financial health that Hach has cultivated.
Moreover, Set Hach's leadership has initiated the formation of 23 self-help groups, gathering 556 members. These groups have mobilized more than $54,000 in savings, creating financial resilience for many families in the region. Through her leadership, she is not only fostering economic empowerment but is also building a community where women support women, creating a network of strong female leaders.
Siyonn Sothearith, Director of Programs at Heifer International Cambodia, expressed immense pride in Hach’s achievements, stating, "Her leadership showcases that one woman's determination can inspire hundreds of smallholder farmers, transform rural communities, and strengthen food systems." This acknowledgment is essential in motivating other women and young people to envision themselves as leaders and innovative changemakers.
Hach’s remarkable journey underscores the core mission of Heifer International, which has been working for nearly 80 years to aid smallholder farmers globally. The organization focuses on sustainable development, helping communities combat hunger and poverty while also nurturing the environment. Approximately two-thirds of their program participants are women, aligning with their commitment to gender equality.
The recognition as an Agrifood Systems Hero is not only a personal triumph for Hach but also a beacon of hope for women in agriculture. As she continues to lead and inspire those around her, her story will resonate with many, encouraging future generations to pursue leadership roles in their respective fields.
