Regional Center of Orange County Celebrates Inclusion
On October 27, 2026, the Regional Center of Orange County (RCOC) recognized seven Orange County businesses for their outstanding contributions to providing employment opportunities for individuals with developmental disabilities. This event underscores the importance of inclusivity and highlights the ongoing efforts to integrate such individuals into the workforce.
The companies honored include:
- - Discovery Cube (Santa Ana)
- - Grocery Outlet (Anaheim and Long Beach)
- - Lamppost Pizza (Orange)
- - Oakley (Irvine)
- - Heroes Hall – OC Fairgrounds Event Center (Costa Mesa)
- - Provider Contract Food Services (Fullerton)
- - Walgreens (Anaheim)
Historically, individuals with developmental disabilities had limited job prospects, often relegated to what were known as 'sheltered workshops'—environments that isolated them from the broader community and offered minimal opportunities. Fortunately, the landscape has changed significantly in recent years, allowing individuals with disabilities to work alongside their non-disabled peers.
Larry Landauer, the Executive Director of RCOC, stated, "Now we take for granted that people with disabilities can and should be able to work alongside coworkers without disabilities. However, those we serve still face various challenges. It is vital that we recognize exemplary employers who acknowledge the benefits of embracing employees with developmental disabilities."
The RCOC has adopted an Employment First policy, aimed at prioritizing competitive and integrated employment as the primary option for working-age adults served by the organization. This is in line with state policies promoting inclusive employment practices. In collaboration with businesses, community organizations, and government entities across Orange County, the RCOC strives to identify job openings that align with the skills and interests of individuals with disabilities.
At the recognition ceremony, the honored businesses were presented with certificates from several local Assembly members, including Diane Dixon, Cottie Petrie-Norris, and Avelino Valencia, as a testament to their commitment to inclusivity. The businesses' efforts not only benefit the employees themselves but also contribute to a richer and more diverse workforce.
