Honor and Recognition: Celebrating Sergeant Tichenor’s Community Leadership at Generations Gala

Honoring Community Heroes: Sergeant Richard Tichenor

The Adult Day Center of Somerset County (ADC) is set to commemorate the exemplary service of Sergeant Richard "Rick" Tichenor at its 15th Annual Generations Gala. This prestigious event, slated for November 18, 2026, at The Palace at Somerset Park, will not only celebrate community leadership but also raise crucial funds to support essential services for older adults.

A Well-Deserved Recognition

Sergeant Tichenor, a dedicated member of the Hillsborough Township Police Department, has been named the recipient of the 2026 Steve Kalafer Community Leadership Award. This award is a testament to his unwavering commitment to community service, particularly towards the elder population. As described by Nicholas A. Duston, Esq., ADC's Board President, Tichenor’s proactive approach to building relationships with older residents exemplifies the spirit of compassion and dedication.

What the Award Represents

The Steve Kalafer Community Leadership Award aims to recognize individuals who truly make a difference through their acts of service. Tichenor’s nomination stems from countless examples of his empathy, his understanding of the community's needs, and a methodology that prioritizes connection over crisis response. Beyond just being a uniformed officer, he is recognized as a compassionate figure who listens intently to residents, supporting them in various capacities.

A Journey of Service

Tichenor’s journey of service extends beyond law enforcement. He began his career in the United States Marine Corps, demonstrating courage and commitment during deployments to regions including Iraq and Afghanistan. His transition to law enforcement in Montville ignited a career characterized by an exemplary dedication to the safety and well-being of citizens.

Now a sergeant in the Hillsborough Township PD, his experience as a patrol officer and K-9 handler has shaped him into a respected leader among his peers. According to Hillsborough Township Police Chief Michael McMahon, Tichenor's passion for public service and commitment to making a positive impact highlight the depths of his character and professional dedication.

Demonstrating Courage Beyond the Call of Duty

Tichenor's heroism came into stark relief during Tropical Storm Ida when he went above and beyond the call of duty to rescue Dr. Kristen Sikorski from rising floodwaters. This act not only solidified his reputation as a public servant but also showcased his genuine care and willingness to step up during emergencies. Dr. Sikorski herself noted his courage and kindness, qualities that further elevate his standing within the community.

Importance of Community Engagement

The upcoming Gala serves crucial aims beyond mere celebration. It represents an opportunity for the ADC to emphasize the importance of support services for older adults. By engaging community leaders, families, and businesses, the Gala will facilitate much-needed fundraising to continue providing valuable services through the ADC. Additionally, it stands as a reminder of the impact that dedicated individuals like Sergeant Tichenor can make in the lives of others.

Join the Celebration

As the date approaches, the Adult Day Center encourages community members to participate in honoring this remarkable leader. There remains an opportunity to reserve seats or tables for the event, so those interested in joining this meaningful celebration are invited to contribute.
