Sewa International's Initiative to Aid 10,000 Flood-Affected Children in Nepal

Sewa International’s Initiative to Aid Children in Nepal's Flood Recovery

Sewa International has stepped forward during a critical time for thousands of children impacted by the devastating flash floods in Nepal. With a commitment to assist 10,000 children and their families, the organization unveils an ambitious plan aimed at providing educational support and launching skills development initiatives in the most affected areas.

Immediate Response and Assessment

In the wake of the floods that struck on August 26, Sewa International immediately allocated $100,000 for relief efforts. The team's proactive response has included active participation from around 90 dedicated volunteers involved in rescue and recovery operations. Recently, Sewa USA President Srikanth Gundavarapu visited Nepal for a firsthand assessment. Travelled through more than 125 miles of flood-pummeled communities, he witnessed the extensive destruction: homes demolished, families separated, and countless children unable to attend school.

Gundavarapu met with affected families, local response teams, and government officials across Rasuwa, Nuwakot, and Dhading districts. The anguish was palpable as he listened to survivors recounting their harrowing experiences, highlighting the emotional and psychological toll the disaster has taken on the community.

Plans for Recovery and Education

Sewa International's recovery plan focuses not only on immediate relief but also on long-term rebuilding efforts. It includes establishing 10 skill development centers across flood-stricken districts, which will cater to the livelihood needs of families who have lost their primary sources of income. The organization also aims to assist at least 500 families in rebuilding their homes, while mental health services are being offered to help individuals cope with trauma from their experiences.

Incorporating a holistic approach to rehabilitation, Sewa plans to deliver educational assistance to children, enabling them to re-engage with their studies and rebuild a sense of normalcy in their lives. This strategy ensures that as their physical surroundings are restored, their emotional well-being is also prioritized.

Community Engagement and Volunteer Efforts

Gundavarapu’s interactions during his visit have helped underscore the importance of community involvement in disaster recovery. Volunteers have already distributed over 800 grocery and hygiene kits and more than 700 shelter and medical kits, demonstrating a commendable level of preparedness and empathy. Furthermore, Sewa volunteers were instrumental in serving over 2,250 cooked meals in the crucial first five days following the floods, continuing to provide roughly 150 meals each day thereafter.

Invitation for Support

As part of their long-term mission, Sewa International is appealing to individuals, community organizations, corporations, and foundations to contribute to its Nepal Flood Relief and Rehabilitation efforts. The goal is to raise over $1 million, and reports indicate that progress is steadily being made, with about 76% of this target already reached.

By supporting these initiatives, donors empower Sewa to provide ongoing assistance while expanding programs aimed at children, education, health, and sustainable livelihoods. For those interested, donations can be made through their dedicated relief link.

Conclusion

Sewa International exemplifies a compassionate response in the wake of natural disasters like the recent floods in Nepal. By focusing on both immediate aid and long-term recovery, they offer a robust support system to rebuild futures for thousands of children and families in distress. Through collaborative efforts and community-powered initiatives, Sewa International and its volunteers demonstrate that hope and resilience can flourish amid despair.
