Safe Driving Summit Aims to Reduce Accidents for Alabama High School Students
In an important step toward enhancing road safety, the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) and the Lutzie 43 Foundation are collaborating to host a Safe Driving Summit at Calera High School on October 8, 2026. This initiative is designed to educate high school students about the various dangers associated with distracted, impaired, and unsafe driving practices. With the goal of fostering responsible driving behaviors among young people, the summit will equip students with essential tools to make informed decisions behind the wheel.
The Safe Driving Summit has a rich history of impacting young drivers across the Southeastern United States. Since its inception in 2022, the Lutzie 43 Foundation has conducted over 40 summits, reaching tens of thousands of students. The importance of this event is underscored by alarming statistics; nearly 10% of vehicle crashes in Alabama involved drivers aged 16-20 in 2025, and Shelby County alone reported over 6,000 crashes, including 19 fatalities last year.
The summit will commence with a keynote address from Mike Lutzenkirchen, Executive Director of the Lutzie 43 Foundation. He will share the poignant story of his son, Philip Lutzenkirchen, a former football star at Auburn University, whose life was tragically cut short due to a preventable crash linked to distracted and unsafe driving behaviors. This personal narrative aims to resonate with the students, emphasizing the real-world consequences of reckless driving.
Following the keynote, participants will engage in various breakout sessions orchestrated by first responders, trauma recovery specialists, law enforcement agencies, and professionals from the trucking industry. These sessions are designed to provide students with a multi-faceted understanding of the repercussions of reckless driving.
"Reducing roadway incidents starts with educating our youth about safe driving practices," stated Dalton Middleton, Drive Safe Alabama coordinator with ALDOT. He believes that the summit not only highlights the dangers but also presents practical solutions for students as they transition into more independent driving roles.
One hands-on session will allow students to explore an 80,000-pound tractor-trailer. This experience aims to give them insights into a truck driver’s perspective, including understanding blind spots, stopping distances, and the unique challenges faced by professional drivers. Sponsored by FedEx Freight and Greenbush Logistics, this interactive demonstration can be a turning point for many young participants.
The Lutzie 43 Foundation introduces its engaging 43 Key Seconds initiative, urging every driver and passenger to take a moment of preparation before driving. The initiative emphasizes the following key habits:
1. Clear Head: Ensure no distractions due to fatigue, emotions, or substance use.
2. Clear Hands: Avoid using mobile devices and keep hands free to control the vehicle.
3. Clear Eyes: Focus on the road rather than diversions inside the vehicle.
4. Click It: Always wear your seatbelt.
Calera High School Principal Jennifer McCaleb expressed her enthusiasm for hosting the summit, stating, "The choices our students make behind the wheel can have lifelong consequences. Our aim is to empower them with knowledge and perspective that encourages safe, responsible driving for themselves and all road users."
Scheduled for 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM, the Safe Driving Summit promises to be an impactful event. By engaging students in candid discussions and practical learning experiences surrounding safe driving, the partners hope to create a lasting change in the driving behaviors of young people in the community.
