Celebrating and Supporting California Firefighters During Appreciation Month

Honoring Our Firefighters: California Firefighter Appreciation Month

Every year, the beginning of October marks a significant occasion as it is proclaimed as California Firefighter Appreciation Month. In 2026, this honor has been officially recognized by the California State Legislature. The California Fire Foundation (CFF), a dedicated nonprofit organization, invites all Californians to join in acknowledging the bravery of firefighters, commemorating those who have fallen, and supporting those who serve our communities day in and day out.

Firefighters are the unsung heroes of our society, responding to nearly three million incidents annually ranging from devastating fires to medical emergencies and natural disasters. This crucial month serves as a reminder for every Californian to express gratitude, recognize the immense risks that firefighters undertake, and reflect upon those who have given their lives in the line of duty.

Recognizing Ongoing Risks

This year, CFF emphasizes the long-term health hazards that firefighters face on the job. A resolution by the California Legislature highlights the severe occupational health issues, particularly concerning occupational cancer, which arises from repeated exposure to dangerous toxins. These risks extend beyond firefighting events; they significantly impact their health even after the flames have been extinguished.

In a concerning statistic, the CFF reported a staggering 45% increase in deaths from post-traumatic stress injury (PTSI) among honored firefighters compared to the previous year. This underscores the vital need for ongoing support structures for the mental well-being of firefighters. Recognizing that their battles often extend beyond physical injuries is paramount. The California Professional Firefighters have actively campaigned for worker compensation provisions for these occupational ailments, shedding light on the importance of safeguarding the health of those who protect us.

Honoring Sacrifice and Memory

On October 3, 2026, CFF will ceremoniously host its annual California Firefighters Memorial Ceremony in Sacramento. This gathering will pay tribute to 37 courageous Californian firefighters whose names will be etched into the California Firefighters Memorial, a hallowed space that serves as a lasting tribute to over 1,500 fallen heroes. The memorial features a strategic expansion in progress, designed to honor families and preserve memories for generations to come.

This ongoing project is unfunded through public support, allowing the Foundation to not only maintain the memorial but also assist in programs swiftly responding to the needs of active firefighters and their families in distress.

Public Support: A Lifeline

In 2025, public support proved invaluable during crises like the Eaton Fire and Palisades Fire, culminating in the largest disaster response effort in CFF’s history. In just 48 hours, this initiative delivered over $5 million in disaster relief, demonstrating the significant role communities play when tragedy strikes. Here's a brief overview of 2025 achievements:
  • - Over $1.8 million was given in immediate assistance to nearly 23,000 people, including many children, who were impacted by the Los Angeles wildfires.
  • - 124 grants worth $5.57 million were distributed to enhance disaster prevention and recovery efforts across the state.
  • - Support was also rendered to firefighters who had lost their homes while protecting others.

These thoughtful actions highlight why it’s crucial to stand in solidarity with our first responders, acknowledging both their immediate and long-term needs.

Ways to Contribute

As we embark on this month of appreciation, there are numerous ways that Californians can show their gratitude to the firefighters serving their communities:
  • - Make Donations: Contributing to the California Fire Foundation ensures support for projects that provide aid to firefighters and their families. Donations can be made through their website at CAFireFoundation.org.
  • - Participate in Fundraisers: Engage in local initiatives or organize events that benefit the foundation.
  • - Express Gratitude: Use social media hashtags like #ThankAFirefighter and #FFAppreciationMonth to share your support and stories.
  • - Share Your Story: Participate in the California Firefighters Memorial Oral History Project by leaving a voicemail tribute, making sure stories are preserved for the future.

As Kara Haynes, Executive Director of the California Fire Foundation, states, “California firefighters show up for us every day.” This October, let us come together to honor their unwavering commitment and stand alongside them in their time of need.
