PetSmart Charities National Adoption Week Returns to Promote Pet Adoption

Introduction

PetSmart Charities, known as the leading organization supporting animal welfare in North America, is once again hosting its National Adoption Week from October 19 to 25, 2026. This annual event provides a unique opportunity for animal lovers across the country to meet adoptable pets in person, fostering lasting connections between pets and potential families.

Event Overview

During this special week, nearly every PetSmart store will collaborate with local shelters and rescues to showcase adoptable pets, including dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens. The aim is to boost pet adoptions while raising awareness about the joys of bringing a furry friend into one's life. PetSmart Charities emphasizes that every adoption not only helps the individual pet find a home but also opens up space for another animal in need.

Encouraging Bonds with Large Dogs

This year's event comes with a dedicated call-to action for families to consider adopting larger breeds. Patrick Bell, the Director of Pet Placement Initiatives at PetSmart Charities, notes, "Many big dogs are calm, loyal companions who have just been waiting longer for their chance to find a loving home." He stresses that visitors should take a moment to understand the unique qualities and personalities of these pets before making their choice.

Insights from the Hill's Pet Nutrition Report

A spotlight on the current trends from the 2026 Hill's Pet Nutrition State of Shelter Pet Adoption Report reveals that large dogs spent 70% more time in shelters compared to smaller breeds. While many Americans regard larger dogs as excellent family pets, there exists a lack of confidence affecting potential adopters. The dedicated shelter staff can bridge this gap by sharing insights into each dog's specific needs and personality traits, empowering families to make informed decisions.

A Legacy of Compassion in Adoption

PetSmart Charities has been championing pet adoption for over 30 years, having partnered with local shelters and rescues to facilitate in-store adoptions for more than 11 million pets. For every 37 seconds that PetSmart stores are open, a pet is adopted through their programs, highlighting their commitment to connecting animals with loving families.

Everyday Adoption Centers

Aside from the National Adoption Week event, PetSmart also hosts Everyday Adoption Centers in 16 select locations where animals can be adopted any day of the week. This ongoing initiative allows pets to live in these designated spaces, available for adoption seven days a week, making it easier for potential adopters to find their ideal companion.

Grand Opening Event

This year, PetSmart Charities is particularly excited about the grand opening of a new Everyday Adoption Center at their store located at 6870 Ridge Rd in Parma, Ohio, partnering with the Brandywine Valley SPCA. This strategic move signifies their dedication to enhancing the adoption process and increasing the chances of finding homes for even more pets.
