University of Bridgeport Partners with CYBER.ORG to Enhance Cybersecurity Career Pathways for High School Students

Expanding Cybersecurity Careers for High School Students

The University of Bridgeport (UB) is embarking on an exciting initiative to broaden early college opportunities through a significant partnership with CYBER.ORG. This collaboration is designed to help high school students not only earn college credits but also industry-recognized credentials as they explore pathways into cybersecurity careers. By leveraging both institutions’ expertise, this program aims to prepare students for future roles in the rapidly evolving technology sector.

The Power of Partnership

With decades of experience in cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and innovative educational practices, UB is well-equipped to lead this initiative. The integration of CYBER.ORG’s comprehensive K-12 cybersecurity curriculum highlights a novel approach that connects high school learning with opportunities for higher education. The goal is clear: to create an early college model that combines cybersecurity education with college credit and industry relevant certifications.

Danielle Wilken, Ed.D., the president of the University of Bridgeport, emphasizes the importance of enabling students to perceive the pathways of their academic journey. She asserts that early college programs should facilitate exploration of potential career paths while helping students to collect credits. "We are committed to guiding students towards careers in cybersecurity and artificial intelligence, and this partnership allows us to bring that expertise into high school classrooms," she explains.

Program Development

Under this partnership, UB faculty will collaborate closely with CYBER.ORG to adapt existing cybersecurity curricula into college-level offerings. By conducting this critical work, they will establish an academic framework specifically designed for high school students aiming to delve into cutting-edge cybersecurity practices. Moreover, this program will capitalize on UB’s technical proficiency through its Engineering School, which boasts ABET accreditation for its focus on technology-driven education.

Building Skills and Connections

What sets this initiative apart from many existing concurrent enrollment programs is its emphasis on career-connected learning. Most notably, this program shifts away from a primary focus on general education credits; instead, it centers on equipping students with relevant skills in cybersecurity. Participants will acquire knowledge that is directly applicable to industry standards and can lead to professional recognition in the field.

This effort aims to bridge the educational gap for learners in public, private, and charter schools, particularly those that currently lack access to early college programs. By democratizing this educational opportunity, UB and CYBER.ORG hope to inspire students to consider cybersecurity as a viable and rewarding career option much earlier in their academic careers.

A Vision for the Future

Charlene Cooper, director of CYBER.ORG, articulates the ambition of this partnership, stating the importance of empowering students from an early age. She expresses her belief that students should not have to wait until college to see themselves in cybersecurity careers. This collaboration aims to plant those early seeds by equipping the next generation with the essential skills and knowledge to thrive in an increasingly digital world.

Furthermore, this initiative aligns with CYBER.ORG’s
